    Posted: 10/16/2008 at 3:11am

Usually, if anybody gives me a long serve on my forehand, I am able to loop it irrespective of the type of spin they put on it.

However, on the backhand side, if I try to loop, i lose control of the ball and it goes off the table or hits the net etc... I usually, step back and play chop. Note that I am able to play backhand drive with may be some topspin if the incoming ball does not have side or bottom spin on it.

Question:

First of all, I need some tips of back hand looping. Often, when I try to play backhand loop/drive, the paddle is positioned vertical-upside-down. Does it have to be horizontal and I need to use good footwork to position myself I noticed this in some videos on the net.

I would say the edge of the blade would be facing down as you're holding the paddle in its vertical position.

great videos - thanks.

In the videos, the backhand topspin is being used against push shots. Will it also work against chops and side spin serves that are long?

I know I need to practice this a lot but I just want to make sure that I am heading in the right direction.

Thanks.

I was refering more to the ready position, just before the motion for the backhand loop is started.  Not how the paddle should be angled at the point of contact.  In this case the edge of the blade would be more toward facing the floor and ceiling (vertical position).  Ahhhhh &$%*, just ignore me in this thread, I may have read the whole string of comments wrong.

Be friend with a chopper.  They can do wonder to your loops (both wings).

Practice your backhand loop against a chopper.  Experiment with the tips above until you find what work for your and get some consistency.  Then you should be able to handle back/no spin serves.

For top spin serves, at first try to block it back (and get killed if you play match!), then gradually increase your power.

Just my 2 cents.

With sidespin serves make contact on the upper outside of the ball so you are imparting sidespin as well as topspin to the loop, this will allow you to control the direction of the the shot.
With heavy long sidespin serves (from right hander) I usually always try to place the shot in the backhand court as it is much easier to land the ball than going down the line or to the forehand court with any real venom.

As soon as your opponent served, after you have read the spin and the first bounce, you should have already decided whether to backhand loop the serve or not before the second bounce.  This anticipation and readiness will ensure you have the proper timing and form to execute your BH loop.

take note of the angle of the bat while doing bh loops. balls fly out due to the incorrect angle that was applied on the bat while in contact with the ball

I just finished watching the entire Kreanga Training Video that I got from kkreanga.new.fr since I've been having problems with my bh loop.

Not that I've had a chance to try what I've learned, but I feel better already from the tips that were shared in the video! =P

Check it out!
