Obviously Cheng is from the older generation. His forehand looping stroke looks ugly.

cheng is a grandpa, older players can't use full body power stokes. But he's 2nd in the us nationals, 1st in the us nationals smooth rubber player. So his stroke can't be that bad. Most important thing is to get the ball on the table rather than looking like a ballerina

He was a training partner for the Chinese team.  At first he was used to imitate the game of Tibor Klampar (seen in the Seoul 1988 Olympics vid), you might notice some vague similarities between the two. 
Later he was used to imitate Waldner's game.  As the Waldner clone he defeated two time world champ Jiang Jiliang (also in the Seoul '88 vid) many times.

This is the time to push some young guys like John to the forefront. I hope there would be some changes after the overhauling in the USATT.
