Here is my story:
I played with Reactor Tornado and Ckylin on my 1-ply blade - loved it but there is one catch. If you don't play rather aggressively all the time, then in short, passive game there is not enough control, not enough placement precision etc. Since with some good attacking players you REALLY need to keep ball very low, put it exactly where you want it etc, I decided to try different rubbers on my second 1-ply blade. Namely, I put LKT Rapid Speed and Rapid Soft on it. Loved Rapid Speed on FH! Great control, very good placement when I need it, attacks are good and so on. However, they (especially Rapid Soft) are somewhat lacking in tackiness/hardness department. Not enough of that when I push back a very spinny topspin (too much reaction to the incoming spin which was not the case with Reactors) or if I fish out a short spinny stroke, or if I need to quickly return the ball from a few steps away, especially with LP players. Reactors practically did not care whether I played LPs or not, did not care much about incoming spin etc - that's why I liked them so much, especially against specific players. Theoretically I could play Reactor setup against LP or anti guys, and LKT setup against regular players... but this might be not a good idea at the tournaments where you really need to "be one" with the racket. So I am looking for an advice - what is a good offensive rubber which is somewhere in the middle - a little tackier and a little harder then LKT Rapids but no so tacky and hard that it becomes very flat on pushes and defensive strokes. Would be nice if it doesn't require re-gluing, too... Thanks in advance, people! Hopefully other people might be interested as well... |

Juic 999 Elite Ultima has served me well in the past and I pretty much require what you have described. You may also check into Avalox Pronte (not soft version). Sounds like you need a nice springy jap sponge with a medium tacky topsheet. ttrubberman also has high quality jap and german medium sponges seperately that he can glue palio tops to. Oh yeah, check out the TSP triple series...... very nice, but not as cheap as chinese rubbers.

A bit pricey to just try it... around $35. But I will look around and see if anyone in the club is using it. Thanks! Generally I was looking for more Chinese style rubbers but not so heavily tacky and hard - proper example of that type is probably (a very good rubber!) Globe 999 National (which I still intend to try some time in the nearest future). |

Hi Jim,
My recommendation would be Cream MRS. This definitely fits the bill. Others that qualify would be Globe 999 topsheet on a 35 degree Quattro or Faster ESN (not to be confused with Faster 1, 2 or 3). It's the one with the airplane on the cover. Although the sponge is pretty good, the topsheet of Faster tends to be a little bit stiff. It's pretty tacky though.
As someone who uses Rapid Soft, I agree that it needs a bit more tackiness. However, I enjoy the dwell time and relative ease with slow, controlled, heavy topspin shots which can be difficult with the harder Chinese sponge variety. I've used Cream MRS on a 5-ply Hinoki. It should feel pretty good on a one-ply.
Out of topic: I load videos from a mini-DV camcorder to my PC. Of course, the files are huge. If you know any, what are good FREE programs that can compress the file size. Even better if they can convert to MPEG 2 or 4 for youtube. Thanks.

Thanks, buddy. I thought about Cream MRS - but you really need to glue it up... otherwise it's a bit sluggish... that turns me off a bit. As for video: use MediaCoder - it can do almost all sorts of transcoding http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/ But you need a good video codec package installed. I always recommend CCCP http://www.cccp-project.net/ |

Really? Maybe I should try it then. But again - same as with Cream MRS... isn't it a tad slow without boosters/speedglue? Or is it only older 999 LSZ? What is this II version - is it a "no speeeglue-required" type of rubber? |

Xushaofa 999 LSZ II is faster than Cream MRS.
It comes in various sponge hardness values and it has been in both an orange and a pink sponge. (More recently a pink sponge). The 2.2mm 43-45 degree (orange) sponge has been what worked for me. I only played with one sheet of pink sponge before switching away to glued H2.

Jim, give the new H3 tuned a try. 37 if you want it soft/not too springy. 38 if you want it medium hard/springy. They're alot softer than the old #20 non tuned sponges. Pretty much feels like the #20 sponge after a buncha speed glue has broken it in so it doesn't feel like a rock anymore. Both have pretty awesome control and spin. 38 has more speed/power. Good thing is that you won't have to glue with em... all the hassel is gone! Both are good on short game like you wanted. I think the 38 is the one that fits your description the most.... tacky, good short game control, good power/speed, good attacking rubber. I've been using it for 2 months and the tuning is still great so it doesn't wear out all fast. |

You can search for a rubber by querying by sponge hardness and speed. Here's the rubber chart, organized by Sponge Hardness:

Speed glued skyline was perfect, maybe the Haifu Ma Lin uses now does the same thing.
