    Posted: 02/09/2010 at 11:43am
Some guys at my club told me that they use WD 40 on natural rubbers such as T64, and other rubbers made of natural rubbers.

This makes the rubber last longer.

Does anyone on the forum use the WD 40 as a cleaner?

I've read somewhere that using WD 40 on natural rubber is not that effective.

Actually, it works extremely well.   I wouldn't use it until the rubber was already nearing the end of it's usefull life because once you use it you're stuck applying it every few days.  But it definitely will restore your topsheet to near-original feel.

Cole, I think that's the most altruistic post I've ever seen. LOL You basically are explaining how to get the very last drop of life out of your rubber. If I were you, I would've posted something like this:

Nah, don't use that stuff. Sounds like you need new rubber; may I suggest this site?

Thanks for the info, Cole.

Also, I've read in one of the other TT forums that olive oil is pretty good using it as a rubber cleaner/rejuvenator. Is it true?

If that's the case, can we use the regular rubber rejuvenator that they use for office machines?

There's a very cheap soap sold at most supermarkets called Pure and Natural. A little bit with warm water does wonders for cleaning rubber, specially Chinese stuff. The WD 40 does work, but if you do not remove it completely from the rubber, you will notice the balls will start getting softer, as if they were getting oily, and will become unplayeable very quickly.

one of my olive oil experiences

I should add, that I had tried it before on another rubber many years back & the results were not as satisfactory.

I've heard told the stiff used to clean commercial printers rubber was a possibility too.

not just any soap, but ivory soap--the regular one that's been around forever--and lukewarm water, as little as possible.

oh, and like cole says wtih wd40, use it with old rubber that you want to preserve.

Here's a link to the OOAK table tennis forum thread in which someone compared 4 different cleaners, and rated the "olive oil" the winner.

The 4 cleaners used were:

1. Nittauku rubber cleaning foam,
2. Orange power,
3. WD40, and
4. Olive Oil

LOL!

i've tried that one, too.

it works, but it'll totally ruin your rubber, so it's something to use only at the very end of your rubber's life.

Parafin aka lamp oil works well, just don't let it sit for any period of time as it deforms the rubber & will take a few days to return to its original state.
I only use this though when a rubber is really dirty or has spinmax buildup on it. I use my fingers to give it a good rubbing & then wipe clean with a moist sponge.
Its much easier to use than veggie or olive oil as it wipes clean & isn't as oily.

Interesting point.  I never even considered the effect on balls.  Usually when I've done that my rubbers soaked up the wd40 pretty thoroughly.  I will usually wash my rubber wiht soap and water afterward to remove any oil anyway, but not always.

I tried N-heptane in the Bestine rubber cement thinner and it worked pretty good. Too much may damage the rubber - not sure about that - but my TG3 sheet got pretty tacky after using it.

You know the craziest thing I have done with the topsheet was squeeze a Cutie mandarin peel onto my aging Mark V. It cleaned the rubber something fierce. There was a sheen like it was almost new and it was more spinny. There were a couple of spots where I let it sit too long and the rubber expanded slightly and then relaxed back to normal. Dude... orange power. (No I don't suggest anyone try this... it wasn't that awesome)
