Dear people,
My vacation just started and i'm kinda bored, so i thought let's try to create my own blade. But i don't know where to find the woodlayers to make it. I would like some Hinoki and some other woodplies, but where can i find these? Is there a site where i can order these or are there some persons on this forum where i can buy some plies from? I hope you guys can help me out. Greetings Anno |

there's a store in my 'hood called "Windsor Plywood" and I was told by my old buddy that he got some "materials" to make his 3 plied all wood blade. There're other places but like my Kawan Indonesia said that some ppl ain't telling. Dunno why?
Also that same old buddy found a solid "Bamboo sandwiched chopping board" that he trimmed/sanded thinner to make it as "Inner core" for his 5 plied home-made blade.
There was once a Chicago t/t good buddy sent me "tons" of POC, Maple and Mahagony and I got my Limba plies from a local friend as well but I gave most away to another retiree friend so he could have a crack @ making his blades or whatever he sees fit....

Hi Van_doorn,
The eaisest one to try first is a balsa center ply and harder wood outer plys. Three ply blade.
You need two "platins", blocks of wood to press the blade between while the glue dries. These must be flat and stiff. 3/4" inch MDF works OK. You can use C-clamps, (best) or just stack lots of weight on the platins.
Do not cut the pieces before you glue them. Glue 61/4" X 11" pieces togather and cut to shape when the glue is dry. Use a good wood glue, (Elmers Carpenter glue works good) Leave the blade in the press longer than you think you have to. It takes a long time for the moisture to leave. Two days is good. If you use Epoxy glue, the blade will be a little faster and harder feeling. The thicker the center ply (balsa) the faster the blade. If you use 1/8" balsa, it makes an All blade. use 1/4" and it will be faster. Use 3/8 center and it will probably be an Off blade. These are rough estimates as it depends on the density of the wood. Balsa varies alot. You can buy 3 ply plywood in different thicknesses also. 1/16th", 1/32" and even 1/64th " are common. Use 1/16th for the top plys and you have a fast blade. Use 1/64th and you have a good defensive blade. The 1/64th is Three plys but is like a sheet of heavy paper. Check your PM box. Warning: you are opening a "can of worms" making your own blades. LOL It is fun. |

Do you know other glues and their effect on the wood? How about hide glue? What makes this glue special? Edit: An interesting link: http://ooakforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=11969 There were also a few videos with a guy who repaired a blade. Edited by Thot - 07/30/2010 at 4:37pm |

Too much work, it is not as strong as other glues, it is water soluable, must be applied hot, short working time,
Other glues are much eaiser to use. Violin makers use it because they can take the top off a violin later for repair by using a knife between the top and side. The glue cracks when the knife is pushed in the joint. Real hide glue is made by heating the glue chips in water to make a glue. Over 140 degrees can weaken the glue.
