Thinner sponges are used by players developing their game also defenders. Thicker sponges are used by offensive attacking players usually 2.0-2.5. Max rubbers offer more speed and spin but less control. Max rubbers are usually heavy so be prepared for the overall weight of your new racket. Max rubbers can vary from 2.2-2.6. 2.6 is rare and has a very thin topsheet to be allowed by the ITTF. Good luck on the new setup but you might consider 1.8-2.0 the next time you buy rubber.

To further clarify.

For officially sanctioned play (ITTF, USATT, etc) there is a rule that limits the total thinkness of a sheet (sponge + rubber) to 4mm.   The topsheet (rubber portion) of any given sheet has a set thickness that can be matched to various sponge thickness.  MAX means the sponge thickness used will bring the total sheet thickness up to (or very close to) the 4mm limit.

Different brands of sheets have different topsheet thicknesses. This means that the thickness of MAX sponge on different brands can actually be a little different.  Brands with thick topsheets have thinner MAX sponge and brands with thin topsheets have thicker MAX sponge.  From a practical matter most MAX sponges are 2.2 to 2.3 mm.

Thank you for the clarification Mark. It is a concern when beginners start with the wrong equipment. The learning curve is much faster with the right setups. At our club I see newbees come in with OFF+ blades and very fast thick rubbers and they don't understand why their shots don't hit the table.

an excellent clarification Mark. I'd like to add that max rubbers should be glued very thinly other wise they still exceed 4mm.
