Ok, I always see post about rubber or blades but never together. So I was curious about my setup and ended up weighing it.
Two complete rackets
Config:
Butterfly Timo Boll ZLC limited Edition
Butterfly Tenergy 05 2.1 red and Black.
total weight.
001 = 185 grams
003 = 181 grams.
Judging by posts I have read here, this might be considered a heavy setup but not for me. Edited by figgie - 09/14/2010 at 5:53pm |

Your total racket weight range is exactly where mine is.
I would guess that you feel quicker with the 181 gram set up and your BH loop off the bounce is better.
I also suspect that you feel like you get more power out of your 185 gram set up but that your over the table play is a bit more sluggish. You probably block better but you might be a bit behind the ball more often.
Does this make sense or is it rubbish?
(Of course we have to account for the fact that the blades are not the same and this would be a huge difference in the power department).

i think that weigh is pretty good, and probably around average. I would not class it as heavy until it's over around 190g.

185g is not heavy. That's what my setup is. I'd put 195g+ as the mark of heavy.

I think more and more that 90 grams blades + 45 gr rubbers = total 180 grams should be the balanced standard around which we define what's heavier and lighter.
From that setup we can go lighter and heavier but also head heavy with lighter blades and/or heavier rubbers; or handle balanced with lighter rubbers and/or heavier blades. Of course the blade itself can be head heavy or not all by itself but that does not change its weight. Just a personal scale I guess. |

My TBS+2XT05 weighs 181 grams and I think it is too heavy. My Ball Whacker weighs about 160 grams.
Paddles don't have power. They have energy and momentum. You generate power. Balls will bounce off of heavier paddles than lighter ones given the speeds and rubbers are the same. This is due to the conservation of momentum. However, 4 grams is not a big percentage of the paddle weight and the weight or mass of the hand must be taken into account too. Your statement makes sense but the effect must be slight. My 160 gram Ball Whacker is significantly lighter than my TBS+2xT05 but I still can hit the ball plenty fast enough when slamming. I haven't a good way to measure the speed but I don't notice the difference in slam speeds. I think I can accelerate the lighter paddle speed to a higher speed and that compensates for the lighter mass. |

90 gramms blade + 90 gramms rubber is sort of a standard for me also. Higher weight for rubber then blade is a no-no for me. Opposite is not a problem like long pips one side and a heavy blade works perfect.
What I can handle depends also how many hours I play. A hand has lots of tiny muscles that play a role in handling a setup. Bigger arm swinging, hiprotation etc a 200 gramm setup or 180 makes not that much difference may even improve that part of technicque. I played a while with a 200 gramms setup that was 193 or something at first.The blade was over 95. I attached some lead from fishing with a nail at the end of the handle. This balanced out the headheaviness from the rubbers nicely and it played well not feeling too "heavy", just solid and stable. Heavy rubbers on a solid blade works well for me as long as I can handle it for quickness. Much better then on a light fragile blade. Edited by tompy - 09/15/2010 at 3:20am |

My racket is 157g, 93g of which is the rubber, 4g for glue and seal. I love lighter rackets in part because I'm not a rock climber, in fact, have pretty much a sissy upper body. The lighter racket is great for snapping my wrists, and they don't hurt at the end of the day. |

I actually play with both. 4 grams is not enough to tell a difference during play. Good to hear that 185 is average. I was afraid that there would be an outcry of heavy blades at a bit heavier than a official baseball. |

Anything under 200 grams is not heavy. To play properly, I think you must use heavy equipment (just like the pro's), or in my cause: being a pro.

the name is confusing... are we talking mass or weight here?
because if it is weight we should account for the variation of 'g' based on your locations... [debraj runs out of the room.....]

What would you consider heavy vs. light for a cpen/rpb setup? I think the standard would be different from a shakehand setup.
