Lately I am experimenting with using a bit of tuner as solvative added to basic glue cement.
Even olive oil can simply be mixed in with the glue and works as a solvent then as it thins the glue. This way the glue layer can be made comparable in consistency (a long lasting tack, viscosity) with the glue layers on pre-glued rubbers. A few dinner spoons on a liter can seems to be enough (I have to experiment more to find the right amount). Too much it becomes a guey mess. In principal this method seems ideal for me as I also buy rubbers for clubmates and have to glue them on at the club. As soon as I get the rubber in I apply the gluelayer(s), let the voc,s damp out completely overnight and put a plastic foil on. At the club only a gluelayer on the blade suffices with a shorter drying time as the voc solvents don,t penetrate the wood too much) . As the voc solvents can damp out fully with open air contact and the rubber can shrink back completely the expanding / shrinking problem is not significant. At the time I apply the rubber I also use voc-free glue...home made with the cheapest rubber cement as a base. |

I am not so sure about using elmer's glue on Tenergy as the glue can expand the rubber a little.

The issue does pertain to ALL the pressurized sponges, whether from Butterfly"s factory or not :) Edited by igorponger - 12/01/2010 at 12:26pm |

I put 2 coats of rubber cement on the Tenergy sponge, when I re-apply to another blade, I only use rubber cement on the blade. It's been working for me.

All types of regular (non-speed) glue seems to be working fine with Tenergy.

I wouldn't use rubber cement on my good stuff like T05. I use a water based glue and I have no problems with bubble or bumbs because I spread it out thin and smooth. The Tibhar water based glue seems to be a lot thinner than Elmer's rubber cement and spreads easily.
I use Elmer's rubber cement on the Chinese rubbers I try. I have to move fast and spread the rubber thin as possible and still cover the blade and rubber. I cut with a good pair of scissors after the rubber dries. I have had no problems and the edge look good. I don't notice any speed glue effect from Elmer's rubber cement but that may because I apply only a thin coating. Actually, I don't want the speed glue effect as I am happy with slower rubbers. I should try cutting the rubber first and then gluing when I attach my next $14 Chinese rubber with rubber cement. BTW, I don't see the problem with Elmer's rubber cement. I remember using it as a kid and now the ITTF wants to protect me from VOCs? Well they are too late. I think I got contaminated a long time ago. If the VOC are truly volatile then they will be gone shortly anyway. I don't want to boost I just want a cheap and easy way to attach rubber. Next the ITTF will tell use that we must used sanded paddles because we may get a blister rubbing against rough wood.

I like to cut the rubber after gluing the rubber onto the blade, I get a cleaner look. The rubber expands after applying glue.

Here is what you should do. Take a thin marker, press the square sheet of rubber onto your blade in the proper position and carefully turn it over with the sponge side up. Then use the marker to follow the contour of the blade on the sponge. That's it- put away the blade, take the rubber and use sharp scissors to cut along the line just within the contour so that the line itself is left on the boundary of the cutout piece. |

All this talk of Elmer RC shrinking your rubber is bull-pappy. RC is cheaper and better... just don't use it if you play in tournaments unless it's been a few days. It has a mild speed glue effect because it contains heptane so it will expand slightly and the contraction will either not happen or barely be noticeable. Fine, leave a little rubber if you know it contracts and suffer the first few days of speed effect until it tames down to being normal. Damn VOC-free glues are an excuse to get more money out of people. BTY doesn't like you buying $1.99 RC.
EDIT: And I definitely need to try the pen method when cutting my next rubbers. I keep tempting myself to try it, seems reasonable. Edited by Phot0n - 12/01/2010 at 5:48pm |

If you pre-cut, make sure you don't 'roll' the rubber on the blade, just place it on the blade from the edge to the handle.
