the umpire is hella messed up, seriously like what wang YueGu said, at least give her a clear explanation of how she faulted instead of just raising the yellow card out of random.

She also mentions that it only happened with Korean umpires.

yup, because she beat a korean player, so the umpire is out to get here, unbelievable.  So apparently she's not the only umpire to be partial in the world of sports

Wang Yuegu did nothing wrong as far as her serve is concerned. The umpire is clearly at fault, as there was absolutely no justification as to what she did wrong. I'm not saying what Wang said was right though.

It looks to me like both women are failing to throw the ball up near vertically. They seem to be throwing it sideways, at 45 degrees or so in the case of the player who gets faulted; which is more prononuced than the other ladies throw.

This is very similar to throwing it back onto your bat and allows for extra spin to be generated, I can see why it would be called.

I don't know if this was explained to the player and if not why not, but it looks illegal to me.
Just because you're paranoid it doesn't mean they aren't out to get you!

I don't really know the background of this whole incident or the prior matches with the Korean umpire.  It was obvious that Wang Yuegue drew a very poor umpire.  But honestly, I thought she herself was acting unprofessionally.  I mean, she's a full-time player with lots of experience so why act like that? I can understand why she was emotional but still, what's up with all the drama.

I think the players today are still enjoying the comforts of the hidden serve days.  During that time, if an umpire called a service fault (usually serving over the table), it was a huge delay.  A service fault called was so seldom that typically, the faulted player would have a huge discussion with the umpire and the opponent would have to wear a warm up jacket to stay warm Smile Don't take my word for it.  It's all on videos out there.  The 1989 Jiang Jialiang vs. Waldner during the team matches comes to mind.  Nowadays, there's still arguments like this one but players move on.

I proposed a solution in this forum to Adham but he just blew it off.  What I suggested was because services now have so many nuances and different umpires look for several different things, then why not make it like lawn tennis where the first fault doesn't result in a loss of point.  Also, some may focus more on one aspect than another ex. one umpire might be focus on the vertical toss while another might be fixated on your free arm covering as was the case with Wang YG.  He replied that umpires already can call a warning.  But the thing is, the warning is pretty much optional.  An umpire can fault, fault, fault you over and over just like the umpire in this video did with zero warning.  With my suggestion, the umpire is required to give that first warning for each serve if he thinks it's a fault.  This gives the player an opportunity to make adjustments.

Any umpire should understand the psychological pressure on the player while she/he's playing specially when she/he is behind in the game ... Broken Heart

Learn to serve correctly and stop crying. If more umpires were more strict, pro players serve correctly and not act up when theres an umpire that actually enforces the rules.

Ditto, she has one of the more illegal serves, I'm glad she got called on it, her crying is just unprofessional, THERE IS NO CRYING IN TABLE TENNIS. She should have just made a slight adjustment to please the umpire and kept playing, she's the one who let her get in her head.

Come on, no more changes, please. Adham has already brought so many changes to TT. This sport will be killed soon, if more changes are on the way..

Agreed. Feng serves that way too. Strictly speaking, it is not legal.

Anyway, illegal serve is difficult to call and subjective to umpire. Some umpires just let it go and some more strict. I would believe it is the latter rather than umpire out to target someone ...

+1

Although I think the enforcement of the service rules is haphazard and seemingly arbitrary, those serves were blatantly illegal. I understand getting angry, but as a professional athlete I think she could've kept her composure a little better. Just my opinion.

Oh-puh-leeeze, yea, its the empires fault for upholding a rule, riiiiight. She's not there to make the players happy, she's there to uphold the letter of the law. The player had blatantly illegal serves, to call the umpire stupid is absurd.

Uphold!! Are you serious ? Show me a player who serves legally all the time ? The referee is stupid because she does not to uphold it all the time and does not give any reasoning why she thinks it is wrong. I think there is something wrong with the law and in my opinion ITTF should do something about it. I mean no one really knows why some serves are called and some others are let off..it is totally arbitrary and to me just looks like the umpire is shifting her weight and nothing else..sorry I have my opinion and you have yours..

It's not about every player, or how to the letter of the law legal each of their serves is. Her serves are extremely illegal, she pushes it too far to where it is an actual unfair advantage and it's in a clear and obvious way. Her serves are too short, they are sideways, they likely have sidespin put on them when they are tossed, and she hides it with her head and shoulders and arm sometimes. You HAVE to draw the line somewhere, it's like how everyone speeds down a highway, its 55mph and everyone goes 60-65, but the cops HAVE to pull over the idiot going 90, and it's no excuse for him if everyone else it "technically" speeding, he's doing it to the extreme to where its affecting other people.

All right let us assume that hers was the most blatantly illegal serve in the world. In that case I would've hoped that her serve be called by every umpire in every match she plays any where in the world..I bet there many videos of hers serving the same serve in other tournaments all over the world..no that doesn't happen..there is this 1 genius umpire who is doing her job and all the others don't think that is illegal. I mean it is a mockery of the system to see a professional athlete being repeatedly called for an illegal serve. It is as if her serve was legal for 95% of the umpires and opponents but not at all acceptable for the rest 5%.It is similar to low blows in boxing..but if it a real low blow the effect is immediate :P. Anyway, I hope if ITTF is serious about implementing this law then they should have an unambiguous way to call a fault..I don't care if there are fancy machines that'll beep or a slow motion video replay that a player or an umpire can revisit... Please look at the US open quarterfinal between Chen Hao and a japanese player..one referee has the wrong idea about what it means to hide the contact and he punishes both players with points on every forehand serve while the BH serve is Ok to him however when they switch sides the other referee has absolutely no problem with either of their FH serves...it is hideous to punish the players that way..and the whole match became such a defensive exhibition it was no longer fun..

Basically she complained that the umpire was not making clear what she was being penalized. One moment, slow in serving, one moment low throw, one moment the hand too low ,etc. Complained she being targetted after winning a korean ...

Aside from calls from the ref, may they be justified or not,

Yuegu shouldn't have acted like the way she had. It was very unprofessional and made her seem like a sore loser. Getting mad then all of the sudden crying.
Even if it were true that Korea was out to get her, she should have maintained composure as a representative of her country.

But then again i wouldn't blame her, playing at those levels must be very pressuring and stressful.

I remember a match where Patrick Baum got faulted EVERY time when he tried his FH pendulum serve. The umpire said ball passed behind his head on the way down after the toss. That got to be the ONLY umpire who calls him on that...

And yeah when Baum played on the other side of the table, the assistant umpire had no problem with his FH pendulum serves at all  Ouch

The umpires right now are either on one extreme (very passive) or another (extremely strict).  The ITTF needs to address uniformity in the way umpires enforce the rules.  If the speed limit is 55mph and they all want to stop you when you're going around 70-75mph, fine.  But right now, some umpires stop you at 60-65mph while others allow you to go about 95mph... if I may borrow the speeding comparison.

No violation of any rule - just a discussion about a net serve. Both players seemed to agree that it was a let, but the umpire still gave the point to Ma Long. After some discussion he changed his mind.
