NO

Imo this isn't topspinning Stern Smile
Also do this against backspin and 99% percent goes in the net.

this is the chinese backhand thomasson, it's different from the european backhand loop.

this is topspin to topspin play, not against backspin.
Also as the title, it's close to the table, not mid distance.
and yeah....it's kinda different compare to european style.

Very nice backhand Thumbs Up it looks simple but you must have perfect timing to execute it properly Smile

Nice left hand on the rise back spin, needs perfect timing, with less effort but power impact. I do this stroke but on the right hand though heheheh

look at the foot work, it really shows the forward motion that adds up to the stroke.

Very nice bh.  My motion is similar, but my stroke doesn't provide nearly as much speed.  I also like how your right foot is in front of your left.  That's definitely the way to do it!!!

It looks very close to a counter hit but the way he rubs the ball he can get a fair amount of top spin. I can use the same stroke against backspin, if I open the racket and rub upwards more. It's a soft top spin but it works very well at my level. The recovery time is very short as it only involves the wrist and forearm, so it can set up my next shot...

nice demonstration of near table BH top spin, Chinese style. Timo Boll executes this stroke quite often too. Of course, Zhang Jike, and Ma Long very often do so.

Frankly this BH loop is closer to a flatter BH drive - it is still a topspin of course, but it's less loopy than most people here expected, probably...

What kind of spin do you think that person is generating?  It looks like topspin to me.

Well duh, obviously the paddle must be more open against back spin but the person in the video is putting top spin on the ball.

It is a good compact backhand topspin.

It's hard to develop the timing for this amount of wrist rotation - you can add more elements to the backhand, but this will add a lot of juice to any backhand shot.

A drill that helped my (very bad) backhand recently - serve short, light underspin, have your opponent drop short, and execute a topspin shot, over the table, using mostly the wrist.  Not a flip, mainly the wrist component of this stroke.  I did this drill for a few hours, and immediately saw a benefit in all my backhand shots (counter, loop against block, loop against underspin).  If the shot is higher, punch more, and kill the ball - if it has a bit of underspin, come underneath - if its dead, you have to use your touch to grab the ball and spin it to keep it on the table.  Great drill.

Imo if he does this, he doesnt generate alot of topspin. I know this isnt the EU style but vs a chinese style the next ball probably gets smacked out of his reach. The ball is pretty high with a low amount of spin.. I know I would smack that :D

I agree!
Not much power since he used wrist too much without using the forearm and shoulder. I don't see how people think if it is chinese style. Where is the full straight arm swing for the chinese style? The timing is a little early, so the ball tends to bounce off the blade like punch/smash rather than spin loop.
It is good drill, but not quite advance backhand topspin.

imho It is the chinese style because, the stroke is very compact and quick. Full straight arm swing? That's a chinese forehand not a chinese backhand!

Would be funny to see how you smash it, I can guarantee that the ball will kick out of your reach much faster than you think

its pretty darn fast ppl. good luck trying to smack it. best chance i would have is to block or counter in the open.

either that or take a chance and back up and try to open with a fh drive. that's the only way i could possibly smack it.

I can probably smack it in practice, but I think my percentage would be too low in game.

He stands much closer to the table during the game so it comes back even faster. I played w/ him once when I was in Taiwan last year. He is a very good player with very great serve!

TTdreamer1982 - thanks for posting the video and thanks for the advice on short push and flip. I got a lot better since then so I'm looking forward to play with you again when I visit Taiwan.

Anyone else who is visiting Taiwan should contact him to play. He'll recommend a good place for you to go play. He is probably around a 2200+ player.
