I have some of the old Butterfly Table Tennis Reports - in the inside back page of the March 1989 edition, they have an ad saying that Chen Xinhua was using a Butterfly Elegance-ST blade, with Butterfly Tackiness Drive Red on the FH, and Butterfly Feint-Long black on the BH - no mention of sponge thicknesses although I assume it would be thin sponge.

He probably played with some old Globe 999 rubber and the old long pips (before the aspect ratio rule). His blade was one of the old DHS ones.

Next question-who has any video footage of Chen? Easily the most entertaining player of any era.
I've got all the Reflexsport stuff, but I'm looking for the full video of him playing an exhib against another Chinese player. You see one clip from it all over the net ('TT played by God') but there used to be the whole video...

You can download his training video online and sort of see what rubbers he used. I thought he only used both side smooth rubber sheets. But I'm guessing he changed later on.

You can download it here. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4WQY7JX2

I think during the time in China's national team Chen Xinhua played PF4 on forehand and a PF4-C7 on backhand.I saw him at the WTTC 1985 in Gothenburg and he played 12-0 in the team competitions and he lost only one set - in the finals versus JO.In the singles he played Ralf Wosik of Germany in the 3rd round.Ralf Wosik was really an expert versus defensive players but it was 5,9,16 for Chen. Here in Germany he had the nickname "The smiler" because he smiled almost all the time.It looked like as if he was just laughing about his opponents.
