ALLCAPS IS YELLING ALLCAPS.

All kidding aside, Dr. Neubauer and Hallmark do a pretty good job of balancing lightness and touch....

But what type of defense?

close to table LP blocking?

mid distance SP chopping?

or even inverted lobbing?

I play defensive style and use OFF blades.
So the best blade is the one that feel right for you.
If you want to learn to chop - I would start with a slow blade and then move up as you feel comfortable chopping

Any blade with good ball feel and placement ability is a good defensive blade.

But mostly what people are saying right now.

Generally defensive blades may (but not always) have a larger head.  Since they are used with thinner rubber (not maximum or 2.1 mm), and often with long pips, with or without sponge (0.5 to 1 mm), these blades are not too heavy.  But, I agree, any blade with good feel and a speed that you are comfortable with would be fine.  I like the Gambler arylate carbon for a very inexpensive blade that is mid-speed, but high quality.  Note that the slower the blade, the easier it is to control underspin.  Usually defensive players like ST handle blades as well, rather than FL.

This is a myth.  Many world-class defensive players prefer FL handles than ST, including Joo SH, Chen WX (e.g. in 2003 World's he used Defence II w/ FL handle), Wu Yang, Fang Yin, Wang Wei, Kim Kyung Ah and Wang Xi (up to the point when he successfully became the "Joo Clone").

My favorite defensive blades are the ones made of balsa. Tons of control. Andro Fibercomp, BTY X3, Donic Alligator Combi, Hallmark.
