    Posted: 03/22/2012 at 11:42pm
I am a intermediate tournament player and am thinking of getting a table for a robot. I usually play on Butterfly Centrefold tables that are 1" thick. However, those tables are way out of my price range. The question I have is: Will a 7/8 inch thick table play similarly to a 1 inch? Will there be any significant difference that will affect my play? (I'm thinking of timing when hitting the ball due to different bounce.)

There are various thickness of the tt table in the market. It all depends on your needs. Once you played on the better bounce tt table you cannot perform the same on the lesser bouncy tt table. Just bear this in mind. I participated in one of the local competition and I could not play at all simply because the organizer uses cheap and thin thickness table. From that day onwards I never wanted to participate at more.

I have also competed on cheapy tables. I lost every match on them btw. I played on a friend's 3/4 inch table and I couldn't differentiate a huge difference. I just think I need insight from other people.

7/8 inch and 1 inch will play the same, but there is more to it than just thickness. Other factors will matter more than 1/8 of an inch. Even a 3/4 inch table plays the same, it is just more likely to warp over the long term. 1/2 inch is too thin, though, imo.

What is a good environment to keep a table to lessen the chances of it warping? By the way, i am thinking of getting the Joola Quantum. Does anyone have experience using it.

You mainly want to avoid too much humidity. And of course don't let anyone store things on your table. :-)

Yes, there is also quality finish, bounce, isotropy, etc. If you want radical improvement for less money, buy a 3/4 Chinese table and put below a 1/2 inch waterresist plasterboard. You will consequently have better sound and unified bounce all over the table. Use also 3-4 layers of w/b Teflon varnish to make the surface foolproof.

Would a garage be a suitable environment for a table to avoid humidity? I live in the East Bay the bay area so the humidity levels are usually not that high.

I am not planning on buying a Buttefly table. I'm not that big a fan of BTY and most of their products aren't in my price range.
