I don´t see any secrets about it. When I have a combo which suits my game 100%, I know it at first hit.
Oh, and I have found it about 30 times already... LOL
I relate to that big time.
I played Saturday with a 90 gr mps and 2 brand new sheets of calibra lt 2.0; I hit 20 minutes with a buddy to warm up with a combo I never played before (another 20 minutes the day before on the robot) and started the tournament; after 8 months of no right handed play (I have been back for 4 weeks) I made it to the final in one event and got eliminated in u2150 by the eventual winner after getting out of the rr.
that combo gave so much control yet the speed was there (that mps is off- and should not be considered a def blade); good flex; great touch and feel; at 184 grams total it's a balanced dream despite the over sized head.
So that combo should be it; it is! well...we'll see.

I'm finding out that many defensive/all blades with oversized heads are not really defensive/all blades.  The claim is more about the control for chopping away from the table than the actual blade speed, which is usually at least OFF-.

I think that as one technique gets better, one realizes that it is not about equipment as long as certain parameters (weight and rubber quality preferences) are met.

Yes many def blades are called like that because they are made for defensive style but it does not indicate the true speed of the blade. Same for Butterfly Innershield ZLF or Butterfly Joo Se Hyuk which are clearly not def blades in terms of speed.

What kind of equipment do you use? I might need to get back to this kind of weight because of my shoulder issues?

Thanks!

I use control blades (Giant Dragon Balsa blades that are nominally defensive or all round). The blades weigh 69 to 77 grams and then for the oversized head ones, the rubbers bring me close to 175, while for the regular ones, I can add grip tape if I need more weight. But those are usually in the 160s.

Any high powered modern rubber works.  I now use Rhyzm 42.5 in 2.0mm because I like the feel on flat hits, but I could play just as well with Tenergy, Baracuda, Calibra or Bluefire.

Rhyzm 425 is just amazing!!! Best medium-hardness rubber I have tried in years!!! I am still playing with T64 on my forehand but if I want to switch to a slower blade I will probably play Rhyzm 425.

Rhyzm is even better but I just can't handle the hardness. Maybe on a balsa blade it would work...

I have wrist problems too. I had to change my Clipper cr to a lighter blade. Now I´m playing Tibhar Balsa sgs with Rhyzm on fh and Boost tc on bh. The blade is a bit slower than clipper but it´s fast enough. Rhyzm works really well on balsa blades. And best of all the pain is allmost gone.

Cheers,
Tommi

What is the point of playing safe shots when you can miss with style
