I think it's possible. I've gotten to the top 100 (in England) in about 15 months with about 3-4 hours of coaching and 4 hours of matchplay per week. It took about 12 months to get to 189 in the country, which qualifies as the top 1%

I noticed the table appears to be in an apartment - how loud is it for the neighbours?
He looks pretty good, compared to when he started. But I am not sure how he will do in tournaments.

There was a more recent thread about this I couldn't find w/ search, but anyway this came up in my weekly power-redditing:

http://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/2w4kkj/guy_plays_table_tennis_every_day_for_a_year/

Top 10 last week in perhaps the largest video link aggregator on the internet. Not bad.

How old were you when you accomplished this? Is it top 100 in an age group or open?

I'm highly skeptical. At senior level you'd need to play british league in div 1 or 2 max, and with 12 months under your belt you'd be crushed.

Our number one player, previously unranked, has not lost a match in div 4 and he's in the 400. He doesn't play tournaments though.

Please don't take this the wrong way but I am with APW46 on this. I am guessing it's not in the seniors. Maybe cadets or if you are good the juniors. You need to play at a very good level and hardest of all have a very good win rate to jump that high that quick. I maybe wrong and if I am kudos for getting so high so quick. If you have... I hope you don't play in my division of BL!

Smacfest's signature says U15 88, so that clears it.

Olio, the initial rating you get (and which sticks onwards) depends highly on who you've played in your first matches. Best case is you win your first five, and you get the best win's ranking points + 100 or so. So unless your friend plays a lot or starts playing and beating highly ranked players, it's gonna take him a while for him to get into top 200 (which BTW got much tougher since they started incorporating foreigners into the ranking list – basically top 200 now was top 120 a year ago).

Thanks Bran. that explains.

The same kid has no chance to be in the top 250 men.

As a reference, I've only started to play British League in September and I'm currently ranked 700 ish in England. I won 3-0 yesterday against a kidin the top 50 under 15. He's talented, practices a lot, and there is little doubt I'll be on the other end of the score soon enough. Just not yet.
