Their budget is no more than 100 dollars each, so I was wondering if anyone can recommend me some allround blades that are good for practice. As for rubbers, are there any other good practice rubbers at an affordable price? I know Sriver is good, but I am open for more suggestions. Handle may need to be thin as well because one of them has small hands.
Thanks a bunch.

A stiga clipper with sriver on each side?
It really depends on their level and suitable style.

Start them off with just a premade bat. When they get better, let them use a stigger clipper with sriver. (Really good intermediate+ rubbers).

I think one of them already is, but she feels the racket is too heavy for her.

how old? I see these 9yr olds that take lessons from our coach and nobody has problem with the weight.
If the kids are getting coaching, get them a quality setup. Its very important. 100 total is tough for composite, and in those cases I recommend YEO or some other hard wood yasaka blade. Yasaka hard wood blades are pretty stiff and offer great control for the wood world. Rubbers 2 x Palio Blitz reg or 2x Vega Pro or 2x Donic Baracuda Big Slam (very light and pretty different from baracuda)

My kid is 9 years old too.
The lightest blade I could find is Andro Super Core Carbon Light ALL/OFF. The listed weight of bare blade is 70+-5 g. Coupled with the narrow blade diameter, the blade with 2.0 rubbers on both sides weighs around 147 g. My kid can swing the blade without any problem. |

Infact, you can use any rubber with Andro Super Core Carbon Light because of the narrow blade diameter, there is less rubber+sponge mass than larger blades. Chinese rubbers with not more than 2.0 thickness sponge would be ok for them. Tensors would be ok only after their techniques improve.

You can save a lot of weight by getting thinner rubbers. I would suggest friendship 729 1.8 thickness, which will combine good control with spin, which will help their confidence. Google ZeroPong. For the racket, something with a balsa core. Alternatively reduce the head size of an old racket |

It's probably the best for students to use the same setup as that their coach (though I would give them thinner versions of rubbers and be sure that the couch isn't using some OFF++ killer blade) - in your case at least give them tacky (thin) forehand.. They should work on their consistency first anyway, and only after they are able to execute like 50 loops in a row (with varying spin and placement and different, random feeding - block backspin topspin) one can start to worry if quality of these shots wouldn't be better with some equipment tweaking - and pretty much every, non-extreme combo is good for training consistency. (Not to mention that probably they won't start their training with looping in first place) |

Appelgren Allplay with 2x Flextra is $80 at paddlepalace. Very easy to control. They would want an upgrade in a few months.

Unless I missed it, the OP needs to define how old the kids are.
Is he teaching them? Are they his kids or is he giving lessons to two students? Are they 5? 10? Have they ever played before? It all depends. Under the assumption that their his kids... I'd be inclined to see if they like the sport before you go spending $100. Head to target and get a couple of duel inverted premades for cheap. Probably cost you $10-$15. If he's giving lessons, I don't know. I suppose zeropong has some premades at an affordable price. But I'd be sure to get a premade probably. At least for their first paddle. If they're still playing table tennis a year from now, sure you can upgrade. But you know how kids are.

I think you should contact www.colestt.com for great deals and good table tennis equipment. Start them with 1.5mm rubbers, than move to 1.8mm - You can choose nice Dawei blade for under $20 ... Please check website for mor info.

not to be contentious but this strikes me as horrible advice... spend $80 on a paddle that would only be suitable for a few months?? on top of that, that price from paddle palace is too high

How old are these kids? Premades until they learn the basics. If they have the basics down then contact colestt. There is no reason to spend big bucks. |

I know some kids starting serious top level coaching at age 7, you can no learn good form with a premade unless it's one of the very good friendship premades or others with good quality rubber. The main thing I would consider is handle size especailly for the girl and nothing crazy fast or crazy spinny

oh I'm not against the Appelgren Allplay... that's for sure a great choice. I was more referring to the notion of an $80 investment into a paddle for that short of time (his opinion) and the fact that the combo could be bought for considerably less elsewhere.... [trying to load tt-japan to check the price on flextra which I think is only $12 a sheet (site is down atm), and the allplay is often found for $30]

They would upgrade the rubbers but they can keep the blade for a while.

You are right. I should have clarified with him whether he meant the entire setup would want to be upgraded in a few months, or just the rubbers. Because as we all know, very good setups can be had for less (Cole's, for example).

i would say that i have a different view of coaching nowadays, before i use to think that all should start at a slow allround rubber and blade, but it seems that the trend now is different from what i have been used to, i have seen kids now starting with off- or off rubbers and blades more and more, i guess thats the trend nowadays, and i must say i see good results, i beginning to embrace the idea of this trend, just my opinion though

Sorry my post wasn't clear. The Allplay will last until they start EJing. I meant they would want spinnier rubbers after a couple months, once they learn to keep the ball on the table hitting. The OP said <$100, so I didn't look for the best price.

thanks for the advice everyone. Yea, sorry for not being clear, I believe one kid is like 7 and other is 10. Parents decided to go with premade rackets as they want to know if the kids truly love the sport.
Alright, maybe they are not 7 and 10.....more like 5 and 8 Edited by O! Ju Qian - 03/18/2014 at 7:59pm |
