There is never enough to make full conclusions. And there is always enough to make reasonable guesses whether on the basis of technique, strategy or tactics once you are familiar with styles and limitations. Some players find success in TT in doing very few things extremely well, and often, pips players fall into this class of player below the 2000 level. Many inverted players do too, by the way. And the fact that both players were more willing to fight on the territory they did tells you that more likely than not, the players are familiar with each other. This is often true in many club matches as well, but lesa obviously so between players superficially varying strategy.

Posting a league match is not entirely fair because in a league match, sometimes, you feel comfortable playing to strengths to force yourself to get better. But in any case, do realize that when a point pattern seems repetitive, it is because both players feel they should have the advantage in that pattern.

Third, agree with others that you don't put enough effort in serves.   I bet Forest Gump would have been thinking serves are like a box of chocolates you never know what to expect  :)  I try not to make the same serve twice.

There is no point in being disgusted with yourself unless you are playing TT to make money.  I really do play for the health of it.  Just being able to play is a victory.  At least it is when you get older.

Sometimes, watching yourself on tape just feels very different from what you thought you did when playing. In my mind, I am doing all these Zhang Jike strokes and moving my feet and I watch the tape and see myself just hitting the ball with this arm stroke and standing in quicksand. I think its a common feeling amongst players who tape themselves.

He's a 2000 level medium pips hitter/blocker. The way I usullly beat him didn't work here so I may need to tweak things. Just thought people would enjoy watching me hit high balls off the table. Like I said in my previous post, serving strategy is tailored to what you know about opponents. What would be instructive for some people (I have my own answers) is to figure out why a strategy that worked for me a week earlier did not a week later.

Thanks for the kind words.

NL, I think your forehand execution was better in video 2 and you look over 2000. I just found two similar points in video 1 and video 2 where your bh loop was blocked to your fh side and you followed with a fh loop. In video 1, you swung too early and missed in the net. In video 2, you waited a tiny bit longer to allow for the slower pips return to reach you and made a nice forehand.

For those who haven't see enough, guess the rating here. Hope NL doesn't mind.

I don't mind. I wanted to post some of my matches against forum members including this one, but on the mytt members thread. Still requesting some permissions before going ahead.

Pushing side topspin serves cost me that match more than anything else. I like to think I would return better today but some old habits die hard.

On the match with Liu, his balls came shorter in the first video because had slowed down his equipment and it threw my timing off. It happened throughout the match. It also enabled him to block shorter and consistently.

Forehand, yes, backhand, no.  Blade is different.  I wish I had tried the blade -rubber combo I used against the MP player before the Teams - the blade I used at teams was Xiom Vega Pro, FH Big Dipper, BH T05.   Might have saved me a lot of rating points.
The two matches against MP player, I used my current setup.

NextLevel - in the video against HeavySpin - at 13:30 you were commenting about your serve. Do you recall why you decided to serve him long? Was it a case of you know that I know it going to be short - so I'm going long to confuse him type of serve?

No. The score was 9-9. So I decided to take a risk on the first serve. My fake did not work and the serve was too slow. The second serve was supposed to be double bounce short but drifted.

After punishing me a bit, Lady Fortune has smiled on me and I should be breaking 2000 for the first time (and with my health who knows how much more or longer) on the next list (had they processed the results, it would have been this week).  I broke it in all my leagues so I happy to get this off my back so I can balance out my life again.

To commemorate this, I will post a few matches vs. MyTT members.  The one with heavyspin is already linked to so I will link to others.

Well, not so fast - maybe a trip to my first match vs. heavyspin is in order to contrast with our most recent encounter.

Here are a pair of matches vs. another forum member.  The first was when I was around 1550 or so.  The second was much more recent and was part of my recent 2000 push.  I wish I could pretend I played the second encounter with skill and dexterity but I just missed less than he did and got lucky a few times with long serves.

I would kind of gamble returning that thing.

Unfortunately, the press clippings are true: NL can't read serves... to show the full impact of this fact, forum member schen can point to this match, where NL can't tell the difference between side back and side top when given a reverse kinda motion.

In the revenge match, I do slightly better but not much so....

I was watching your rematch video when I just realized I was on the table right behind you playing one of my matches also. Also at the 3:52 point of the video the person from the table next to you is a fellow member from my club also.

Yeah - I did meet you at Nationals.  Lots of people I wish I had met but didn't.

You guys on the West Coast have home court advantage... so it is important to have the higher rating or else...  This Toprank-ed, wicked server and spinny third baller, could have upset me if I wasn't careful...

Yep the next day after the 2000 singles we met. If we had both won in the round of 16 we would have had to play each other.

That would be one Alan Bi. I just played him on Wednesday night. We split two matches 3-2 (12-10 game 5) him and 3-1 me the next match.

it probably is Mark Wood. I know he had to play Alan. He requested a umpire while playing because he said Alan's serve weren't legal. The only illegal called in the whole match was against Mark.

Yeah. That's a big danger with calling umpires. Your serves must be squeaky clean.

He is now living in the Vegas (Henderson) area now. It's nothing new for him to call out the person he's playing. Especially if he thinks it will unnerve the person.
