LAZY PUSSY CAT...
Can pingpongers compete well at lawn tennis? Can the pussy cat beat a tiger? Pingpong is a mere childplay, not athletic sport, sorry. |

At one time they could. Fred Perry won the 1929 Worlds Men's Table Tennis Singles Championship. As a tennis player, he won eight Grand Slam Championships in the 1930s. Ann Hayden Jones won three tennis Grand Slams in the 1960s and was ranked number 2 woman in the world at table tennis back in the 1950s. Both Mr. Perry and Mrs. Jones competed with wooden tennis rackets and table tennis rackets that have come to be known as hard rubber rackets, or if you will, hardbats. Very good point. Did they also wear white to play TT? I'm pretty sure Tennis it was mandatory. I believe Roger Federer is only allowed to play TT outside Tennis - all other sports are banned until he retires - either his insurance company or sponsors put that in his contract. He was allowed to ski until he had fall injured his ankle or something. Wait ...that might support Igor's point!

I believe Roger Federer is only allowed to play TT outside Tennis - Because the table tennis balls were white, white clothing was not permitted in competitions. Men and women in Perry's and Haydon-Jones' day wore solid color shirts or blouses and pants or skirts, though by the late 1940s Ferenc Sido and Richard Bergmann were wearing shorts, which everyone but the late Mr. Reisman eventually adopted. I saw a brief YouTube video of The Fed and Djoko playing table tennis in what looked to be a garage. Roger, playing with sandpaper, had long, graceful tennis-like attacking strokes, a quite respectable defense, and very natural looking all-round footwork. Djoko, playing with a hard rubber rubber racket with blue rubber, had a very nice looking defense mixed in with a cleverly selected attacking backhand. Neither is quite ready for Ma Long or Jim Butler, but given the proper incentive (money, and lots and lots of it), both these guys could definitely become kick-ass TT players. So for that matter could Serena, though her TT technique needs a little more work, but there's definitely a power looper buried in that Amazon frame of hers.

On the ladies side: I believe there a player from eastern Europe who is dating/married to profession TT player. She is supposed to be a good player. On the mens side: 1. Gael Monfils 2. Raphael Nadal 3. Roger Federer They all play TT quite a bit - waiting for their matches. Players have voted Monfils as the best! In the Miami tournament there is one court full of TT tables - not sure who sponsors that event. Most likely for some sort of charity. |
