Did thet really use the ordinary plastic 3x star butterfly ball at the world championships? Feels like this ball is too inconsistent and should have broke much more than it did ( if it really was the bty ball)

I don't know but I would also guess it's something special with the balls at the tournament. I don't play close as hard as the pros but my butterfly balls breaks often.

The umpires might have been instructed to change the balls every 2-3 sets. So when the second or third set is over, the assistant goes to pick up the ball. He puts it in his pocket but when he gives it to the umpire, he gives him a ball from the other pocket. They did this earlier this year in an international tournament. This way it looks like the ball is durable. In that particular match both players agreed that they would start using a new ball after the third set and the officials accepted.

Informative and sad at the same time if true.  Thanks.
I like putting heavy topspin on the ball...

I don't believe they are made of any special material or on a special manufacturing run. I suspect they are just the best balls they can find, something one could label as 4*, if such a label existed.
Additionally, the players scrutinize a selection of balls to pick the balls they will use in the match.

And on a similarly sad note as Hans, the umpires are far more willing to change the ball mid-match than in the past.

All the players in the final rounds get to inspect the balls and choose the balls in the practice/lounge area before there matches. So they are using the best balls available.

ALL THE CAKES FROM THE SAME OVEN.

Butterfly, Tibhar, Shieldkrot and some more ball brands they all are known to come from DF F%CTORY.   All the cakes from the same oven.

I have now got DF 40+ of the newer batch 2015,   priced only 1.5 US per one, real pleasure to play..    DF is a ball well famous for their prolonged durability and strong tactil response.
DF plastic is now mistakenly underrated with many players. Still it is worth try anyway, great money saver. Yes.

Factually,   BTF Ball makes no difference from DF.     Either of the two balls would come from the same production machinery, from the same ball plant..   Feel not happy about BTF stern cost over 2.5 Usd? Just go and take DF instead, it is the same beast , much cheaper at that.

Never am I a money waster, hence I ultimately decided on the DF40+ to my better satisfaction. Yes.

My wife just bought 200 Gambler 3* (USATT only, not ITTF approved) for $0.50 each during ZeroPong's recent  two day special promotion.  As you say, all the cakes from the same oven.
