    Posted: 09/16/2015 at 2:27am
Hi,

I'm thinking of going to Hebei Zhengding Table Tennis Training Base for about 2 weeks next summer. I'm living in Vietnam so it's closer and cheaper for me to travel there rather than return to my native Europe. I'm not really interested in tourism; I'm going purely for the table tennis.

I've read the reviews here on mytabletennis.net and on tripadvisor.com. I've read, and taken on board, that it is better to email the center itself rather than rely on the tourist agency as they try to profit on unsuspecting foreigners. I've emailed 'Julie' at [email protected] and received a response.

Julie says it's between 50-60 dollars a day for TT and accommodation. That's a total of about 900usd. After just checking skyscanner.net, I figure flights for me would be about 400usd return. The train from Beijing to this place would be about 60usd return. I guess food would be another expense on top of this.

All this sounds good. Has anyone been there recently? Are there other places in China I could go that would be better in terms of value for money? Like I said, a good table tennis experience is my top priority, and I'm willing to pay a little more to go somewhere else if a better learning experience can be had.

Regards,

Tomas

Beside the training base in Zhengding, there's a new training center in Beijing. The owner of this facility is Guo Yan, a former CNT top player. Check the link below. The contact info is included. You may contact them to find out more details.

I guess if you are living in east Asia already some of the novelty might have worn off, and time is always limited, but there are really amazing things to see in China beyond the table tennis including in Hebei.

Hi Tomas, I think we played at Hoa Luu club once a few months ago :)

I've also thought about maybe going to a training camp before I move back to Europe so would be very interesting to hear from you when come back.

Lots of shirts, during the summer months it is brutal especially if you sweat a lot like me.

My advice, always keep water in your fridge (they will provide bottles of water). Always use the breaks in between training to rest after the first few days.

I took 2 pairs of tt shoes just in case. There are a few physical table tennis shops in Zhengding and Shijiazhuang so if you get really stuck you can just buy stuff, though Tenergy is pretty expensive.

Hope you enjoy it! :)

I think it's much better to base yourself in a nice, biggish city with good food, massage, malls, public gardens, and sightseeing opportunities rather than live the spartan life in a training camp facility. In a big city, there are lots of clubs; you can get training at any of them. Play some league nights. And unless you are truly super-fit, you'll be unlikely to sustain even 4 hours a days of high-quality training day after day.

I went the other way from Shijiazhuang to Beijing. As I recall it took about an hour? Nice clean and modern train too!

Hi,

So I spent 15 days there. Had a great time and would recommend it highly.

1. Travel.
Flew into Beijing and got the train to Shijiazhuang. Nice, fast, modern train. Not expensive; about 30USD.

2. Accommodation.
Was in the west wing. Room was great. Internet worked well (used a VPN to access the wider internet). Washer on balcony. Quiet. Clean. Daily cleaning. En suite. Card key. Fridge in room. Electric shower.

3. Food.
Buffet breakfast just downstairs. Breakfast wasn't the best, but the food was great otherwise. All you can eat. There WILL be something for everyone.

4. Facilities.
Gym is nice. 4 training halls; the women's training hall is the coolest, with all the memorabilia. Men's training hall was enormous with nice grippy flooring, lots of space.

5. Training.
2 or 3 training sessions per day, depending on the time of year. It was afternoon and evening when I was there. It was tough physically for the first few days. I was really getting into it at the end of the two weeks; would recommend a month, if possible. They have an English speaking coach who circulates and helps out. Invaluable to me as an intermediate player. Usually once session per day is dedicated to multiball, and the other dedicated to single balls drills.

6. Town + Local Area.

A shopping centre about 10 minutes’ walk away; can get anything you want there. A tt shop about 2 minutes away. Local people don't pay much attention to foreigners; neither friendly nor hostile. I didn’t go far from the training centre, but it was a peaceful area and I had a nice walk every day.

7. Cost.

60USD per day for accommodation, 6 hours training, and 3 meals. A bargain.

Hi Tomas, thanks for the info. Would you mind posting photos or videos?
It would be useful also to know your level (may be USATT aprox. rating?) so as to evaluate if the experience would be worth for players whose levels are under and above yours.
And any other info would be appreciated ( drills, any special tip from the coach, etc)!
Thanks again.

I'm not a high level player; been playing approx 3.5 years. Where I'm living, there's no rating system, but from videos I've seen online, I would say I'm about 1800 or 1900 (on a good day). Training involved being partnered up with someone, and doing single or multiball drills. Each session lasted about 3 hours; usually two sessions per day with lunch and dinner in between.

There were many types of drills, mostly for improving footwork, as well and shot combinations e.g. backhand flick then forehand loop, or backhand short push then loop against backspin from the backhand side.

It was pretty gruelling at first. The level of skill there was unbelieveable; many players have been there for months and years and were superb players. I was, almost certainly, the lowest skilled player there. But at the end of my time there, I had definitely improved.

Here are some videos I took while I was. I don't have any videos of the multiball training. Watch out for the videos at the bottom. The head coach of the whole facility invited me to go to a local school with which he had some ties to help train young kids. They were so young, but their skills were great. I found out that this school is where Wang Liqin went when he was a kid (at least I think so). Cool, eh?

Thanks for the pics.  I went there for a month in 2010 and enjoyed my time there.  Better to go with group and understand some of the language.  The training was good.  On reflection I should have gotten the lower individual training.  Play around 1600, and trained with the kids.  Book directly through the center, not cntttc.  The PR junior team was there for a couple of weeks while I went, great attitude.  Many kids didn't want themselves in video.  Link below.

Very nice videos tomas. By the way, were you in any of those videos? Everyone there looks so good. I would love to eventually go there and train for a few weeks, but looking at the level they play at, I think I'll just be a waste of space...

Do you speak any chinese?
They look pretty good, but maybe they would leave you aside a bit.
Being a foreigner, the worst player and not speaking their language.
Also it seems as if they are all kids except for the guy who comes from US.
Doesn't that feel awkward?

I'm not in an any of the videos. The level is high, that's true. But the players in these videos are some of the highest.

There are four levels of ability, and you will be placed with the appropriate partners. I was the lowest levels, and mostly did multiball; the kids were pretty patient with me. At the end of the two weeks, I had improved. I was bad at the beginning; now I'm less bad Tongue

My lack of Chinese was only annoying because I couldn't receive detailed advice on strokes etc. There is a coach there whose job it is to take care of the foreign players. He usually played with me for an hour a day. That was really helpful, because he fixed a lot of errors in my strokes.

p.s. that guy wearing the USA t-shirt is Chinese; he's actually the coach just under the main coach (who you would have seen playing the chopper in the video above)
