A new year has arrived! I'm looking to buy some new rubbers to upgrade my game.
Do you guys think that Yasaka Rising Dragon is great for Penhold Forehand? Personally, I don't know, and I've been a huge fan of Skyline, and Addias P7 (which seems to have similar qualities) P7 has felt and played like an upgraded Skyline and I've had much tourney success with P7, so I'm reluctant to try new rubbers. But now with everyone starting to use the polyballs, I might just have to use new rubbers. We all know that DHS National Rubbers are the best, but too expensive/rare. So what does everyone think is the best F/B rubbers for Penhold now? |

Skyline 3-60 is for 40+ ball if you
are used to Skyline 3. Xu Xin is using DHS Hurricane for backhand right now. If you want to do an experiment, you may try Hurricane 3-50, but heavier than Pro Beta. |

I'm a penholder and have Rising Dragon red max on my Nexy Calix 2. It is really nice. I used it on my FH but it's mostly now on my BH.Powergrip is on my FH. Rising dragon is much better than unboosted skyline neo TG2 and I actually had both rubbers on my blade at the same time and YRD has much more feel, speed, spin, and control. IMO much better at mid distance than skyline. Comparitively with other FH rubbers I've used recently (tenergy 80, rasant powergrip, TG2, rising dragon): feel T80<TG2<RPG<YRD. Speed TG2<YRD<T80<RPG.
Spin TG2<T80<RPG=<YRD. control T80<TG2<RPG<YRD. Let me know if there is anything more specific you want to know about YRD. It's great if you like the spin game and has tons of spin on serves. I play an aggresive close to the table attack game. |

Great reply!
I am currently playing Addias P7 on my forehand, because Skyline TG 3 wasn't enough spin and couldn't grab heavy spin well enough for me and I didnt want to drop $100.00 on Chinese National Rubber. Here in my club they're still using the celloid ball so I'm still using Addias P7 (mainly only just for the high spin which i use for serves) I checked out the Skyline 3-60 its not enough Spin for me to play my 3rd Ball Game. So far, Addias P7 has been my favorite rubber yet. It's got everything I want. I just don't think it would be great for Polyball. |

Also I was curious if I got Rising Dragon in Maxx, what rubber should be on backhand then? Anyone got any ideas for Backhand Rubbers? I've been using Hammond Pro Beta but I wonder if theres any good polyball ready rubbers thats 1.9 thickness in case Rising Dragon Maxx is like 2.1 which I hope it would be.

Johnny Chop: It’s somewhere between the
two. Probably more Chinese because it’s not a tensor rubber. The sponge feels
Japanese. Playing short spin game it feels like a Chinese rubber. Looping it
plays more like a Japanese rubber. I think it falls short of the speed or
tensor feel.
Penhold Boy: To be honest I played with the polyball exclusively last month and switched back because my partners didn’t want to play it anymore. I think you just get used to the ball just like anything else; I think it’s all relative with the rubbers plus your opponents have to hit the same ball. P7 probably has as much spin as any of the top rubbers from what I read. I want to but haven’t tried it yet. MX-S seems to be great for spin. I haven’t tested it enough. Once my main setup wears I may try it full time. For me, I think adding a higher speed paddle will help me more with the polyball than the rubber. That’s the road I’m traveling now. I’m not familiar with Nittaku’s Hammond rubber but I have tried Rakza 7 soft and Rasant Beat for softer lighter rubbers on the backhand and I think R7S plays very well for blocking actively and passively. It’s good for countering topspin and has a lot of spin. To be honest I prefer medium to medium hard sponges on my BH and I like using T80 or Rasant Grip and YRD. I don’t do much passive blocking and T80 plays well for my BH game. Tons of top sidespin for any of the mentioned although the Yasaka's do add a level of grabbing or feeling the ball. At my level any mistakes with my backhand are more due to technique than the rubber. Unstoppable: Compared to YR7 I think not much more speed maybe even but with added spin, feel, and control. It’s been a while since I played R7. RD's sponge feels medium to med hard but it plays much softer to me compared to say, T80, and the top sheet is quite elastic and you can really feel the ball sink in before it expels. I think R7S has that same feel, maybe even less feel probably due to the tackier top sheet of RD. The tack wears slightly off and I think when you first play it, it does feel a bit more springy like a tensor. I’m not sure how much of that was getting used to the speed or me adding rasant powergrip on the other side and having a faster comparison. |
