Who was your first coach, the person that taught you the game that you love. Mine were called Prisca Rosario & Keith Keane, there are probably thousands of kids in Melbourne that owe them a huge debt, I know that I sure do. I think these people that give their time and experience are sometimes forgotten when no matter how much better we get it is because of the basics they taught us.

My first real coach is Sean O"Neil. We are very fortunate to have him living in our town and less than 10 mins away from our home. Sean is amazing. He is patient and he breaks the game down clearly for us adults to understand. I'd highly recommend him to anyone :)

p.s. this sounds like a Yelp review i know... lol

My first «coach» was a colleague at my previous job. My first «real» coach is a man named Gunnar, great guy. Good to make the game easier for an adult that started late.

My first coach was a Hungarian emigre named Danny Vegh, one of Hungary's top junior players in the late 1940s, who came to America at age 23 after the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.

In 1961 he opened up a table tennis and pool club with six table tennis tables and a dozen pool tables in a second floor loft on Euclid Ave. and E. 19th St. in downtown Cleveland.

I first met Mr. Vegh at the Woodland Recreation Center in 1959, where many of the best Cleveland table tennis players were playing at that time.

During the summer of 1961, I worked for him at his downtown club, which was open seven days a week from noon until midnight seven days a week.  I oversaw a small snack bar behind a counter with several stools for anyone to sit on who wanted a snack and kept an eye on the pool room for gambling or played table tennis with anyone who came in and wanted to play.  I did this for free, and when Mr. Vegh came to the club at around 5:30 or 6:00 he would give me table tennis lessons for free.

Mr. Vegh was one of the best defensive players in the country, a two-time National Doubles Champion with partner Emory Lippai, and a six-time state of Ohio singles champion.

When I was coached by Mr. Vegh, his approach was very thorough, particularly with regard to defensive techniques, strategies, tactics, and footwork.  It was not until 1964 that he began to teach me the forehand and backhand topspin drive Hungarian style, and the forehand and backhand sidespin drop shot.

Mr. Vegh presently manages several stores in Cleveland and Akron, Ohio which sell pool tables, bowling equipment, and table tennis equipment for recreational table tennis players.  He is presently 84 years old.

This is interesting because I´ve had only one coach. And trained with him only for 1 year, but he taught me the basic fundamentals of table tennis. And I was already 24, started really late in the sport.
After that I started to compete in tournaments, moved to another city and never really trained again like I used to do in that first year.

My first real coach was Wei Wang.  I learned the basics from her since she was teaching a table tennis class at the university I went to.  Then I played at her club for many years and took a number of group lessons with her.  I had a few coaches after that, but Wei was the one who probably had the most effect on me, with Stellan being a close second.

I am so sorry to hear that you never had access to any good coaches.  Instead you learned from great coaches.  Unlike most of us in the US you can't blame your TT problems on being taught bad fundamentals in some basement by a friendly neighbor.  Or better yet claim you suffer from having taught yourself to play.  The later is the only way I maintain any self esteem in regards to my TT play.

Mark - So badly self taught that even Stellan could not fix it.
