Here are a few chop serves I threw together earlier today. Give me your thoughts, I will share mine later.

I think you make the spin obvious with you motion and it bounces a bit high. I would try to mask the spin and keep the ball lower so its less easy to flip and it goes a bit longer to only double bounce. You dont want it to bounce to close to the net or else its too easy to flip no matter how much spin you put on it.

Let me first say, you do know how to make a lot of spin on the serve. That is a very positive thing, and it is very difficult for many people to do.
But I must agree with ffx-me. The serve is a bit to short and high. Wait just a little bit, when you hit the ball. Also meant as, take it lower. Another thing is, the serve doesnt have enough speed. The best short serve is a serve with max speed, and you can still get it to bounce twice on the other side of the table. Try to that that serve you just did, and try to get the second bounce (on the other side of the table) to hit the edge of the table. This way the opponent dont know if he/she should loop or push.
Good luck!

We are starting to work a little more on his BH now just to get him used to the ball coming to that side really, but he is still very static on that wing and I need to get him to stand squarer to the ball. He does seem to have a naturally spinny BH shot though. Just though I would stick a couple of shots on as I did them at the same time.

Thanks for the tips, but this is not a serve I would ever use in a match myself. I just posted it to try to flush out a few kids who tend to rave about this sort of thing.
If I do a chop serve in a match it has considerably more spin on and is quicker (hopefully bouncing a second time on the opponents side somewhere near the end of the table) but it doesn't spin back to the net so it doesn't look as impressive to the novice.

yeah it lookd like you're being forced to do the server, it's looking boring.
maybe its because it was only a demonstration, but i think you should curve yourself more and hit with a little more impact |

Looks like the rubber is doing most of the work, and you barely.

I forced myself to do it, but it isn't a serve I would do in a match (unless I was playing someone considerably worse and just mucking about).

Why do any work if the rubber will do it for you
He has to learn sometime. Might as well be now.

MA LIN !!!
Your son is Timo Boll and you are Ma Lin ! What a family !
I also practice back spin services, not that I do them on match but just for fun and also warming up purposes. I noticed that when I manage to do some in a row, I'm usually ready for real match.
You do yours with standard SH grip that I can't. I do mine with pintched handle ala Timo Boll (see what I mean).

Actually he did ! Two times in a row against, excuse me...Waldner. 1999 world semi final. Waldner returned 2 drop shots down the line that Ma Lin killed with 2 loop kill ...down the line, and the audience goes woaw !

I would have to see the vid, but I suspect they were a little lower and probably faster. Serves like this just give too much time to get across and flick.

Thought I had better put the record straight. Here are some chop serves I might actually use in a game. 50% more spin than the ones above and a much better length (you'll have to take my word for that).

It's the wrist-snap (or lack of snap for a float) which makes a good deceptive serve since we can't hide it anymore. Must watch where I throw the ball up from though in case I get any keen umpires.

I personally find your serves great, there are nice deceptive moves and it is difficult to predict how much spin is there. Combined with a variety of other serves, so the opponent does not get used to them, I think they are a great weapon.
I would like to see videos of serves of the people who think these are not that that good, so I can see even better ones...! |

Might have to be Monday for the other vid as I am taking my daughter out for her birthday tomorrow. I will see how much time I have. will try to get the camera at the opponents eye level and throw in a few floats to see if people can pick them. You would be surprised how many very good opponents can't.
My serves are one of the better parts of my game and I am always in the top 5 averages in the 2 cities where I play so they can't be too bad.

They are good serves. That backspin was HUGE! It actually reminded me of the Malin serve video on Youtube (the one where he has no shirt on).
the second serves you did seem to have more sidespin on them but again they looked good, or good enough. Can you place them anywhere you want on the table? i.e. long - short - left -right etc? |

They can be placed anywhere but I mostly put that particular serve to the backhand or crossover. I have other serves I put wide to the backhand and forehand. The second serves are mainly backspin with a small amount of side, it is easier to see from the slow-mo shots. I have another serve with more backspin again which I use occasionally but I have much less control over the length of this one so very good opponents can sometimes loop it no matter how much you put on it.
