At the 2007 US Open I witnessed two umpires arguing with Mr. Reisman that he could not use his hardbat with blue rubber in the open event because it was governed by ITTF rules and that included the rubber. Mr. Reisman stormed out very upset with two umpires yelling for him to go back. Mr. Reisman proceeded to present his case to someone else (I imagine it was at the control desk) and later a decision was made reversing the umpires. So when I said that "they might give some grief" I was correct, right or wrong. Mr. Reisman did get away with it this year, probably in great part because he is Marty Reisman, but if next year the event becomes an ITTF Pro-Tour event, he might not be so fortunate. I don't think I would have been allowed to play with his rubber combination in the Open (sponge) section. I believe that the only rubber that is exempt from the two color rule (red and black), and only in USATT play is Leyland rubber. And it has to be the same rubber on both sides. Many years ago Mr. Bernard Hock managed to get Leyland rubber approved for all USATT tournaments. Alberto Prieto |
