I played to chang yuen su   numer 3 from taipei, and i served very spinny as fast as i could and he couldnt land his loop but the third one looped a monster loop that struck my table like  bomb, i felt like a brick struck the table ,crashing sound like when a bottle breaks, his serve was o spinny that the ball moved in way i never saw before.

blocked 2 loops but i saw them leaving my racket ,NEVER COMING TO ME..INSANE FAST

Obviously he was waaay better than me, but he turned out to be a nice guy, so he gave me a chance to play some of my game instead of owning me with his serves+short game. I ended up grabbing a set which was quite a fun experience even though I am fully aware that he was only giving like 50% :P

I think i played in this tourney : ) in Brabrand?

the only reason i got those 3 pts. was cuz his ball was soooo spinny that i kept hitting it into the net and then it would roll over, cuz the net was way too loose.

I also played him at an exibition a couple of years ago. I played a game to 11 points. I lost 12-10  or 13-11, I don't remember. I even had a set point, which was pretty cool. Obviously he could beat me 11-0 if he wanted to, but he mostly lobbed balls for me to smash, which wasn't easy beacuse of the variety of spin he put. He even hit the edges of the table 2 or 3 times, which means he can put the ball very close to the line with little margin of error. He did a couple of nice serves, one loop which passed like a rocket, and thats was it.

I played and trained with a lot of high level players including ex-chinese national team members, but nothing compared to Waldner obviously.

yeah, that's what he did with me--mostly lobbing.

but, i actually went up 3-1, cuz i mis-hit his backspin serves into the net and the ball rolled over cuz the net was too loose.

I got to hit with the ex-pro again yesterday for 90-minutes doing drills. Playing much better players is the way to go. The problem is . . . much better players have to play us. LOL Our challenge is to make it worth wild for them. I am trying to rally as long and hard as I can and blast enough winners to keep him on his toes . . . at least in his "B" game. He agreed to hit with me again next Sunday at 3PM.

I get a chance to play one heck of an ex-pro every couple times a month, he's one of my fellow club members.   He won the world championships in, I guess, the late 30's early 40's.  His name is George Hendry and he's now 88 years old.

I'm guessing he used to play offensively, but now, because of his age he does almost all blocking and awsome placement.  Alot of the higher rated players at my club still can't get the ball by him.  He's a living legend in my eyes.

Here is an article about him

Houshang Bozorgzadeh is a former champion who went on to coach a lot of the american national teams. He now resides in Iowa, where I live. He goes to the Iowa games every summer and winter, and so I see him there. I haven't played him yet, but the style he describes in that article still frustrates. A guy at my club who is a good consistent player came in second to him in the 'over 40' event. I heard a few of the rallies reached 50-100 exchanges in that final match, but i didnt get to see..  but the guy is an all around/attacker. Houshang was just too consistent and strategic from what i hear.

I played Houshang in the 94 US Open and won 2-0.  He was the US National Men's Team coach at the time, I believe, so he was not in playing shape.

The best active pro-level player I've ever played against in a sanctioned tournament was Fan Yiyong at the San Diego Open ten years ago.  I lost 3-0, no surprise there.  The second best player I've played against in an Open event was Stefan Feth last year, when he was still playing actively in NATT tourneys.  I won the first game but lost the next 4 games.

I can say that I am lucky to get to play a couple of legends from the Chinese National team (70's) almost every week. Husband and wife, Former World Champions Li Zhensi and Zhang Li. They were US National team coaches in the 90's. They were also coaches in China after they retired from competitive play.

I take lessons from them. They really helped me improve my game a lot.

We never really play a game or match. We do play out points, pretending it's deuce, as part of my training. Every so often I think I hit a brilliant shot and their instincts kick in and I'm just left standing there admiring the shot.

The best part is when we talk about the game and I get their insights.

Yeah he's pretty crazy, although that video doesn't necessarily show it that well because his opponent is super agressive close to the table so the rallies are pretty short. This video from the same match has some better rallies, there's one at 2:30ish which is pretty good: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=OXLPwZrc1r0&feature=related Especially his serves and backhand loops are insane. In that video he's actually beating a Danish national team player Christian Larsen 3-1 or similar.

Yeah Brabrand in rhus right? :) how did you know which tournament I was talking about? :D I met him in the group stages of the U21-Elite series. I randomly found this video of him warming up against the worst player in our group lol: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=e-toaQgljFo
That guy was a totally crap LP player though, I thrashed him 11-3,11-4,11-4 or similar.

What series did you play?

Tawny Banh and Wei Wang many years ago.  It was just club play and not real tournaments.  Sometimes, they get in a mood to challenge all the tables in the club.  They beat everyone at the table (nicely, of course) then move on to the next table.  Two main differences I've noticed is that when they serve short, it's REALLY short like they force you to step one leg under the table.  And two, the spins are much heavier so there were many times when I dumped balls into the net or if they reduced the spin slightly, I would pop it up.  Fun times!

I know what you mean about these old school hardbatters.  I've also hit with the late Bernie Bukiet.  He was a bit on the cantankerous side but the guy barely missed.

I was coached by the national champion of our country. I played with him a lot. But couldn't really touch his level. He did have some pro level experience. In asian qualifying round he played Ma lin!!!! He said he was destoyed completely. Whatever he did was killed with brutal force. I felt scared hearing the story.

some days ago a guy came to our club...
he was from sweden, he said he had played at high levels in the past (he said he played doubles with the coach of the sweden team).
now he is 19 i think and plays not too often.
they gave him a really crappy paddle.
i beat him but his technique was very good.

International players...
Christian Hotz (Sui)
Gilles Michely (Lux)
Mike Bast (Lux)
Zoltan Fejer-Konnerth
(Ger)

Local players/coaches...
Wei Wang
Stellan Bengtsson
Angelita Rosal Bengtsson

All of them could take me 11-0 if they wanted, but they're nice people and didn't make me look too bad!
When I was hitting with the Luxembourg players, their coach came over and help me with blocking! It was difficult to stay on the table and control the ball properly.
