I keep getting beat by this guy at my club. He stands really far back from the table and uses a lot of wrist and very little arm movement to put topspin on the ball. He starts very low and the ball has a very high arcing trajectory. When it lands on my side of the table, the topspin causes the ball to shoot forward very quickly.
How do I hit back shots like that? Every time, I either get caught off-guard and the ball shoots past me, or the topspin causes the ball to go really far, thus allowing him to do the same weird shot again. I try to hit short so he is forced to play over the table, but it never works. Thanks |

Unless you can loop consistently away from the table.. You can serve short and return his serve short too..
keep the game tight.. keep vary your push placement.. |

What about taking the ball off the bounce? Then the ball can't shoot past you.

try blocking...with a more closed angle...if he's as far back as you say then if you block then it'll go shorter then he wants it so then he'll have to move up to get it...I would say just move him around...and go more to the corners...

The margin of error is very little in those shots. You really have to time your shots to perfection. If the ball also loaded with side spin which usually is, especially coming from the BH side, than it will be more difficult and practically be a big gamble to take it off the bounce.. Something else comes to mind, you said that this guy use mostly wrist. In that case he doesn't have a lot of 'sting' in his strokes so he is playing a more passive game waiting or you to make a mistake. So when you are force to back up from the table, play percentage shots. Just worry about keeping your shots in, don't try to end the game too early, vary your placement whenever you can and try to find that one chance to kill the ball.. |

What is your level ? Are you able to do a short block ? If you are surprised by the rebound try to block, you should at least touch the ball.

Hope you liked the book! I haven't been by here in a while, but stopped by last night while web browsing. I'll be out of town for two weeks starting tomorrow (Dec. 16-29), so may not be around too much during that time. I'll be at the USA Nationals Dec. 16-20, then family Christmas stuff. -Larry Hodges |

Try this..basically from mid distance you have to make sure to hit( or rather graze) the ball almost near it's top surface with the paddle being almost parallel to the table. Or if you are fast enough you need to go further back and wait for the balll to descend and try to counter loop when it is dropping rather the drive it..both these techniques require some time to master. Good luck & hope this helps.

this works for me... loop right and left just making sure the ball is in (not trying to kill in 1-2 loops) then when his return isn't too spinny i then whack the ball to the opposite place from where he's standing... i get the points from both looping & whacking. used to have problem with this guy, but no more... |
