go to store.
buy a wood sealer.
go home.
put the paintbrush in the can.
take it out.
spread the sealer across the wood you use.
one layer is enough

You can do as sebas-aguirre said above, but to be stay safe you should buy the sealer specifically made for table tennis blades.

I've also always been foggy on this.  What exactly does sealing your blade do?  My guess is that it keeps the blade from splitting and/or splintering when taking off rubbers.  Is this true?

Yes, it's true ! I've tried with Wood Varnish and water sealent both works fine. Wood varnish is a bit thicker.

The water sealent is very thin, so I have apply 3 layers. No problem for water or cement glue. But not glue sheet, tried and get splinters! Cry

In general wood and water don't go hand in hand so to prevent damage to a expensive blade, sealing it is a must.

Unless you are sponsored or really rich then sealing won't be a problem.

Joola varnish. I apply 1 layer.. then wipe it off after a minute or two, so this way I get a very very thin layer on the blade.

Use sealer made for table tennis if you have money you do not need.
Poly is the strongest varnish sealer there is.
The sealers made for table tennis do not even tell you what they are made from.
Might even be Poly repackaged and the price trippled.
Sealing a blade will keep it from splintering. Some blades are notorius, Stiga is one.
Sealing will prevent your blade from absorbing water from the new water based glues.
Water based glues can be wiped off with a wet rag if it is sealed.
Your blade will stay cleaner, dirt does not soak into the wood.
Sealing the edges helps keep the top ply from seperating if you hit the table. Some blades have a very thin top ply and are prone to this.
Glue sheets will pull fibers from almost any new blade. You won't notice them if you have an inverted rubber but pull an OX rubber, stick it on another blade and you will see the bumps then. Glue sheets will "Usually" stay on the OX sheet and it can be transferred to another blade.Smile

Speed glues used to be rubber cement with 2 cents worth of an ingredient added and the price multiplied by 6 or 8.
Tuners were also over priced by a factor of 6 or 8.

He might be sealing all three at the same time... Tongue

To remove the seal (i-sure), just apply speedglue over it. the seal from i-sure will be gone... Been there done that... Tongue

Hi Rokphish,
Do you have any idea what I-sure is made from? How thick does it dry?

sorry, i don't know...
it's milky white (clear when dried) and smells good unlike polyu...
it gives shiny finish and smooth...

don't have caliper to measure thickness either..
i sealed 2-3 layers and it's gone with one layer of speedglue...

Xiom I-Sure has a white liquid and smells pretty good. I think i read somewhere that it is lacquer based.

Spreads quite thin unless you put 3 coats or more.

What glue did you use for the blade?
Now I only use BTY  Free Chack but a month ago I used BTY Fair Chack.

I believe and will probably get flamed. But if you are going to use seal a blade, you should use a water based glue from the same company.

Like using Xiom I-Bond with Xiom I-Sure or Andro Free Seal with Andro Free Glue.

I know a lot of forum members have used other 3rd party sealers with glues with much success so i could be wrong here. It could be matter of trial and error until you find the right combination.

Also in my country i don't have access to various types of sealers like Tearmender and even my choices of glues are pretty much limited to brands like Butterfly, Xiom, Andro and Avallo so i have decided to go the safe (cheaper) option of using a sealer and glue from the same company.

Interesting enough that Butterfly doesn't have a sealer of their own. Probably a sneaky way of selling more blades since unseal blades will splinter easier when used with water based glues.

?
both times it ruined the seal on my blades when applied with locally made speedglues. one brand is my coach's own brand, the other was my friend's home made speedglue. have not tried with big brand speedglues because pretty much those who use speedglue uses the el-cheapo kinds which are locally made or some use chinese made ones like dawei/729...

I have the same problem too. I've sealed my Acoustic with 2 layers of Donic Formula Lacquer. It become harder and lost it's feeling and dwell time. But I try to remove the lacquer with locally made speed glue. It has a stong gasoline smell. I pour several drops on the blade, then using clothes to rub it in fast motion. The lacquer indeed peeled off and gain the feel of the blade again Big%20smile.

maybe you should add gasoline in your fair chack. Or just use fair chack but you must use energy to rub it hardly untill it feels hot.
I don't rub the Acoustic printing wor0ds  since I afraid it will fade since I'm using speed glue with gasoline.

speed glues are rubber cement with a nicer can, a nicer paintbrush and a logo on the can. Tongue
water based glue is the same glue you used when you were a kid and had to buy a glue for school. oh, with a logo and a sponge. Tongue
