Can someone tell me how this guy is always able to attack the ball first (over 80% of the time) and how he can have such a huge fh and such a huge bh and still able to know when to use it? I really want to know, he never looks like he's about to rip it and then notice it's short and give it a push...he just ALWAYS know how and when to rip the ball....how do the chinese train him?!

easy. i guess he anticipates every ball coming out (that is, has lots of speed) and so he prepares to rip them however if the ball is short ( that is less speed) he can adjust by pushing.
this is the basics in service return.

yeah like I notice when I play with players with 1800 and less it's easy for me to anticipate and I usually have a pretty good 3rd ball, but I played a 2200 penholder and he destroyed the crap out of me!

his technique is brilliant and he always takes the ball when its at the peak of the bounce he also has a very very fast handspeed
and his footwork is excellent so he can get into to the correct position fast

good example of power vs control. his power and playing style limit his game. massive power usually means lack of control, and inconsisdency. Chen qi's game is like a wild rides, up and down. he can win 4 pionts straight effortlessly, and he can also loose 4 pionts and the next mins or two due to his own mistake.

very true gene,
but his power is one of the reasons he is such a threat to the top 5,
but his inconsistency is why he is not in the top 5

I don't think Chen is that powerful at all. Look at this youtube clip against Samsonov. Chen is putting maximum force in most of his shots but can't penetrate Samsonov often at all.
When Ryu Seung Min gets chances like Chen Qi it doesn't come back. In most of these rallies Samsonov's loops look as fast or faster with less effort. |
