good post...but i have found a blade for my game a 7ply that gives me more power and better short game with the same control as a good 5ply...there can be exceptions...but generally speaking i would be hesitant to take one's review unless they played with the same setup of the new equipment at least 2-3 months
Viscaria, Ma Long 5, Old Clippers, BTY Ovtcharov and Various Custom blades

I agree, after all researching and asking questions in forum like this about an equipment, at the end you do need to test it in reality. And most of the times, you'll find it that with a new equipment you gain something, but you also lose something.. That's not all too bad though... I think you will discovering more and more about yourselves and what works and what not works for you... So at the end you can decide what you want..

What I identified as illusion is the "feel" of the new equipment that affects the opponent a lot, supposedly giving you this false felling of improvement, while in reality it is just a side effect - lack of control.

I agree to some extend..  Using an opponent as a point of reference about how an equipment has improved my game is quite tricky...

Like what you have said, the 'improvement' sometimes comes from lack of control.. Smile  or, maybe your practice partner were not feeling feel and hence not playing as good as he used to at that day giving you an illusion that you have improved.....

But then once he get used to it, the improvement begins to be disappearing... Or, you are facing a better player and again the improvement seems not to be there..

It is tricky, but with practicing over and over again with the same partner or maybe even robot, you can have a better judgement how an equipment effects your game.

Why "put practice behind"?  It can open up another option, "Option 3: learn to flat hit with my current equipment".  Furthermore, you do not now what effect Option 1 has on your looping.  Of course if you can find a setup that good for both looping and flat hit, there should be no reason that you shouldn't use it.  But is there such a thing?  Or is it an illusion?

chu_bun, what I meant by 'put practice behind' is not that we don't need practice to improve...

What I meant is that for this discussion we don't need to discuss the important of how practice improves your stroke... it goes without saying... I think everyone knows, I hope, that you need to practice to improve your stroke with whatever equipment you are comfortable with...

However, no matter how much practice you have put into your strokes... there will always be your stronger or more consistent strokes than others... At this point, you can be happy with your current equipment, or upgrade to maximise or minimise..
