I was playing in a club competition today and my mental status was really bad.
I was scared nervous and all the other crap that makes you play badly. Anyone know how to conquer fears and nervousness? Apart from the obvious beathe in a out stuff... Thanks a bunch [I'll be needing this for next week's comp ^^] |

Forget about loosing or winning. Thinking about them will damage your game greatly. Just concentrate on each ball. It is either you can control it or learn something new. Keeping them in mind helps me a lot in my games.

i agree with caigichaduoc. Also good practice will do wonders for you game/mental game. If you can't perform a shot during practice, you won't be able to do it in a real game.

Getting nervous is a matter of habits...and don't feed this dragon...simply do what you are doing...and ignore if you body is getting tightning up...it will be a very slow start...but humoungous changes will be made in time! Try to play in as many nervous situations as you can and practice this: try to beat noobs on 0 or bad players under 5....the more pressure you handle...the better you get at it.
Practice makes perfect.

Toto, i have been like this for years on and off.
Palpitations before a game turning into rigor mortis like inability to move properly resulting in loss of energy.
Anxiety in wanting to end a point as quick as possible due to lack on confidence and game plan etc.....
Then i saw a tv prog. where a guy spelt out an alternative view of what FEAR meant!
F = False
E = Evidence
A = Appearing
R = Real
If you look at it logically, it is true, you create it yourself, totally unnecessarily and then it kills you. How do you know how the game will go? You don't, so why spoil your game and night out over something that you don't know.
So, before a game, i always refer to this, anytime i start to feel a dose of the nerves coming on and it has worked perfectly. in conjunction with using smelling salts before each game, i clear my head both physically, psychologically and metaphorically, so that i have no demons trying to encroach upon me and this approach means i start a game calm and relaxed and clear in my mind how i want to play and i am able to adapt to change and tactics readily.
Good Luck in trying to overcome what i think is the curse of table tennis, nerves! Turn fear around, slap it in the face and use it positively!

stick to one decision and do it, dont ever doubt your decision in playing the type of spin or shot given to you by the opponent, stick to ur guns in that instance, you will feel much more at ease if u do.
i was mentally afraid of this guys serves, he serves heavy and no spin, and i always lose to him [70/30], but in those instances where u can see it, or u want to do a shot, just go for it. |

Ok alot of pros use this technique both in tennis and in table tennis. (trust me i know this hehe)
Follow this exactly or it won't work!!! Before the game think of a time when you achieved something great, like kissing a girl for the first time, graduating, passing your driving exam etc, now focus on that feeling of confidence and certainty and magnify it 10 times until it is unbearably bright in your minds eye. Now think of a gesture you can do e.g pumping your chest with your arm , or some kind of personal power move you can associate with that feeling of immense confidence and certainty. Now every time you are in doubt in a game, do your power move and it will snap you back into that state you were in before! |

It may sound totally silly, but I found out playing a tune in my mind helps me greatly... Last year was Bittersweet symphony (the verves). This year, Beautiful (C.Aguilera). Of course, if I suffer a bad loss, I change tune to a new one until I got an unexpected win. Then I stick to this new tune. You can call it superstition or weird habit, but it really helps me to keep focussed and confident. I stay calm, no matter what happens and then I can see my opponent getting nervous facing such "calmness". Very enjoyable !

This is a major problem and there are long-term and short-term solutions. Long-term solutions are - getting better with a lot of practice - getting calmer by playing more competitions - getting more relaxed by learning yoga or other ways to control your mood and mental toughness Short-term solutions are - quick relaxation techniques (again, from yoga or other such theories) - drinking some coffee helps sometimes - listening to some music - recalling some standard TT techniques you learned and implementing them even if you don't feel like it - trying to convince yourself not to care about the result. That does not mean however that you just smash everything around you... you still need to keep your head cool |

I think you shouldn't think about winning or losing. Just think about things that you do well. Don't think negativly...think positivly...then you'll feel better

umm really all these tips are good, but there one simple thing you have to realize
who cares if you do good or bad, its not like youre playing a world championship match, in fact, youre just playing a simple match in your club, just hit every ball youre supposed to, its not like your a professional player or somethin......... |

I try to force myself to not care whether I win this point. Because when the nerves set it, I divert to a more defensive style and don't have confidence in my BH loop and I'll start blocking and pushing more. I remind myself not to care whether I win this point because I know by forcing myself to use my more aggressive shots (which work very well in practice) I will benefit in the long run, sticking to my normal strategy instead of falling to a safer one. |

I know this sounds silly, but I lift weights, so before a game, I flex my muscles, as in not pose, just tighten them so they bulge, and it shows, and I flex my pecs, they jump. It gives me a feeling of power over my opponent.
And, I forget about winning or losing, or what the score is, I concentrate on his game and mine and on each ball individually. And I never, ever go on the defensive just because I am losing. If there is a ball to be killed, I will kill it. |

Read a book called The Inner Game of Tennis. A coach suggested it to me after I completely melted down in a tournament. It's about how to keep your mind from getting in the way of your body. The next tournament I played in, I gained more than 200 rating points.
