I have seen videos that KLH and JO using BH sidespin block when opponent loop to their BH. Question:-
1) Should our grip be loose or tight?
2) Should the racket be opened like a chop or closed?
Tried this lots of time but can't do a good and consistent one. Please advise.

i have tried it a few times and it still depends on the strength and speed of the incoming ball, close your racket a lil bit if its kinda strong and move the blade sideways from right to left upon contacting the ball

You should be relaxed and also practice whatever you want to utilize.

To get this kind of shot right you need to spend a lot of time blocking against good topspinners who will keep the ball in play long enough for you to develop the touch.
For these kind of 'magic' blocks the angle could be anything depending on what your feeling is. I find most topspins can be chopblocked with open racket or blocked with a closed racket, but of course many times those blocks are wrong for the situation. Yr teammates wont be calling you 'Waldner' if you mess one up in the deciding match |

one tip though..don't try this kind of block on a non-spinny loop or fast drive loop. these kind of blocks are especially effective when your opponent gives a slower, spinny loop. For the rest...a matter of practise!

Totally agree with master-pong. I only want to use this when I am out of position to give a solid block. Tried use closed racket b4 and managed to do so but it is giving me a very fast return which has high % of missing the table too. Should I loosen my grip on the racket? But I thought if I loosen my grip, I wont be able to instill sidespin on the ball. Confusing!

My guess is have a tight grip accelerrating it rapidly to the side against a fast loop or spinny loop. and loose against a weaker one. I'll have to test it out.

When I do sidespin block, which I try mainly use if my opponent is looping a slow spinny loop from his BH, so I can direct it to his wide forehand, I do it as a wrist shot mainly. I have a relaxed wrist and a pretty closed bat. Then I roll my bat onto the ball sideways+a bit forwards, sort of cutting diagonally across the ball (more sideways than forwards tho), using my upper arm and wrist mainly. Can be HIGHLY effective when used right.

I guess you will use this technique when you are caught off guard when your opponent suddenly execute a slow spinny loop. You are actually counter the topspin with side spin. Close your blade a little and move your blade from right to left (if right handed). If can try not to give too tight to have better control and not too loose as to lose stability.
If you can block the topspin on time, do so and don't use the above technique unless you are in full control and wanted to change technique to confuse your opponent.
You need a good partner who can loop consistently for you to practice
