I have a question. Some of these guys like Wang Zhen and Fang Bo are World Class Players, but how come it does not look like what we usually see how they play in international competition. They still played great in these matches but not that good and excited. Fang Bo played with the chopper in 1 clip and won by only 2 points of the last set. Why was it so hard for him to defeat this chopper? I do not know who this chopper is but of course he can't be compared to Joo. Can someone explain? Thanks

I was there for the final.  I can tell you this... Fang Bo is good, but not really world class or as good as Zhang Chao.  Fang Bo doesn't have the backhand to go through the chopper like Zhang Chao did.  So, he has a hard time to beat the chopper.  Also, if you watch the video, you will notice that Fang Bo just kept on looping on his forehand.  He didn't do anything different for all 5 games.

On the other hand, Zhang Chao has more power on his forehand loops.  He moved the chopper around the table.  He looped one and push one... he alternated his shots (BH and FH).  He didn't take any unnecessary risks.  In short, he is a world class and a smarter player than Fang Bo.

However, let me tell you this... if someone plays a counter attacking game, Fang Bo will play well because he has the speed to adapt.
Speedy,

Thanks for explaning to me. I'm clear but still kind of upset to see how Fang Bo played. I thought he did beat Timo Boll once? I thought at this level and with this intensive training, he should not have any problem against choppers or pip players especially in china they have a lot of these types of players to train with. I know it might be harder for him to play against with chopper than counter attack player but can not be that difficult. THis guy is not Joo or one of the famous chopper at international level.

It's just the way he played did not convince me enough. Eventhough he won, I could still think it's a tight game and it could be luck to win too.

I think the closest match was between Fang Bo and Wang Wei (3-2). Wang doesn't play internationally but his USATT rating is 2795, which is close to world class. Compare with another modern defender, Wang Xi, who dominates the German league.

Don't underestimate players just because they don't have a world ranking!

As for the final, Fang Bo beat Lin Ju pretty easily.

I think he played a chopper on east china university also.

they don't always play their hardest.  for example, a couple months ago, players like zoran primorac, bojan tokic came over to play a tournament.  they were amazing but you could see they weren't playing their best.

There are times where these chinese players already know their going to win so they dont have to win by so much.  Also, this tournament doesn't mean much to them and the competition is much weaker.  On ITTF pro tours, the stakes are much higher so their level is higher

No body expects him to beat everyone easy. Just a question and curiosity since we are clasified in different levels in tabel tennis running down from World Class down to garage player. When you're talking about world class level, it's more like a career and that's why the expectation has to be high like any of US basketball player.

Why did he have to try his hardest? No difference between 11-0 and 11-9. He was so confident that he would win no matter what. It's smart to save some energy for more matches to come. Besides, it takes weeks to get over with the jetleg.

A picture of the team Alex Table Tennis - Hokies

Alex Table Tennis - Hokies did well and moved up to the 5th Division (started 6th), and everyone will get adjusted (from 2000 to 2150 range).

Thanks Alex; I'm a UVA Wahoo and you just made me want to lose my lunch by congratulating a Hokie team.  Dead

In spite of that, I did enjoy watching all of your teams via all the live and recorded video.  Thanks again!
