Kai uses more BH than he used to, which is a big change for Chinese trained player in general.

Well, that is clearly an influence.  I was thinking more about the trickiness of Roberts game.

The thing the commentators seem to miss is that these guys (Bob Chen and Yonghui Liang) train/coach at the same club so they know each other's game well.

I have to admit to enjoying watching this tournament far more than most ITTF pro tour events. Very high level of TT, full HD streaming, heck, even the sponsor's logo is clearly visible. Many thanks for everyone at Westchester club for making this possible!

Which ball are they using for this tournament?  I know Westchester switched to XSF, but Joola is one of the sponsors.

IMHO, it is doubtful that Liang would have been more successful against Bob had they been from different clubs. Jimmy mentioned that Bob's significantly underrated, and that sounded like a very plausible explanation for the match outcome.

Liang Yonghui actually took 2 games off Ovtcharov when they first played...

When Bob Chen first came to the US, he was on the East Coast before moving West.  When he first arrived, they felt that he would definitely challenge Eugene.  I have no doubt that when he is on, he is 2750+.  But there are quirks to his game that came out when he played more - he was often nervous in close matches.  Familiarity does help.

Eugene's spin isn't effective so far...

But looks like that has changed...  definitely off the chop...

The weirdest thing about Kai for me is that I am too blind to see how Roberts influences his game.

Anything for you, Next Level ... the handle on Eugene's blade was taped but it looked all wood 7 ply blade "very, very, very similar" to Stiga Clipper.

Can anyone hear Jim's comments about the bounce of the Joola balls?

If they were using XSF or NP40+ ball Bob wouldn't miss all those easy FH attacks.  Whenever I used Joola plastic ball I just played safe most of the time, and won easily against many really aggressive players that I used to have trouble with.

I can hear what he is saying - I am just mentioning it because there are some people who believe that the inconsistency of the Joola/DHS balls are figments of our imagination because they have not observed such inconsistency in their own practice and pathfinderpro did not find such inconsistency in his analysis.

Now what if they had used an XSF ball for that match... think about it...

Good match, but think about all the crappy rallies that people will never know when a deviant bounce just messed up the shot...

So, bottom line - go for the middle instead of the wings. Exactly as Larry Hodges' "Table tennis tactics for thinkers" tells you over and over.

Yeah, but it's hard to practice unless you are dedicated - the middle is always moving - the wings are always where they are...
