I'm very interested in what my fellow penholders are using on their forehands. The 999T has finally died, and I'd like a little feedback from what else is currently considered "good".

I currently use Fenghun3 (Faster 3), it's very fast and spinny, easy to produce low arc speed loops.  This rubber is more for quick attacks and mechanically induced loops.  I used to play with tacky rubber and graze loop, so I'm still not completely used to this rubber, it was definitely a positive surprise how fast and forward my loops got.  I might stick with this rubber to play with a faster style or go back to graze spin loop style, either way this rubber is a very powerful, fast and spinny.

I use Yasaka Zap (made by PALIO) on my forehand.  The middle gear is very flat.  I am planning to try H3 next, since Skyline III worked for me pretty well.

i really don't ask a lot for my forehand rubber. i used hurricane 3 (comm., nat./prov.) and i really didn't like it for some reason. i think hurricane 3 seems somewhat risky for me to use, so i always get this mixed feeling. i think globe 999 suits me well because i am power looper with wide/big swings, so i am looking for more control in my shots. i also use dhs sponge just to add a little bit of speed.

I dont play with pen anymore, but before I used H3 with a few good layers of glue

Magna topsheet on Innova UL sponge.
Soft, spinny, fast with enough glue. Great for opening loops, not that much power for long distance rallying though. Best to stay mid distance (and glue heavily). I'm not really a fan of heavy chinese rubbers, nor really tacky stuff. I'm going to change to Yasaka fusion after I kill this rubber (Approx 10 weeks before the topsheet loses the slight stick).

Its nice to see a few traditional short pippers still among us. Bit envious of you now, the list of good short pips is very small indeed.

Well, just to hypothesize. What do everyone think the ultimate penhold rubber should be? I find that more and more of the rubbers coming out of China isn't geared to be a penhold rubber at all (Palio mostly).

for forehand i am bit biased to short pips that are spinny. it does not need to be that fast. I am basing this on liu guoliang who used spinpips before it was banned and it was not the fastest around but if you see him play he used it with power and precision. its his technique and not the rubber(maybe the wood hehehe)

for inverted it depends on your stroke. high throw or low throw? if you can close your blade angle low enough for the traditional block then high throw rubbers are the way to go. if not then use low throw rubbers.

for me the best would be a light low throw rubber with lots of spin for services and the open angle loop.

There is no ultimate penhold rubber - it depends on the penhold style, be it fast attack, mid/long powerloop (ie, jpens), etc.

yeah its true. especially if you are you are using a jpen or cpen.

for everybody: if you are a cpen player, would it mess up your game if you play with jpen? there is something inside me that wants to try jpen. My style is a flat hit off the bounce with sp. i would like to try looping using inverted in a jpen. ( i am inspired by ryu seung min hehehe ). My main concern would be weight. are jpens heavier?

Posted By: TT_Freak
Date Posted: 03/29/2007 at 12:17pm
It felt unwieldy playing J-pen, mid-distance play was nice but that style just isn't viable anymore.

i feel that cpen is the better out of the 2 penholds, because cpen gives more flexibility, you are able to block and push with a flatter angle on the bh, and easier to graze loop while still able to mechanical loop with ease.  of course, that's just my opinion, comparatively, cpen is more holding onto the paddle, jpen is more holding onto the handle.

i've tried many rubbers before and i think 999 would be a suitable rubber for most penholders.  This rubber does not pack a lot of speed, but has all the gears you want to play a consistent game.  i've been playing with it for almost 3 years ever since i switched from the other brands  i've used before.

I have tried many rubbers (stiga, butterfly, andro, donic, yasaka, avalox, globe, DHS, Friendship, Dawei, nittaku, juic, palio, etc)

My favorite is DHS H3 with many many layers of glue.  I currently use H3 with with extra, ma lin carbon, korbel, OC, BT 777, BT 700, Primorac Carbon, etc.

My favorite blade with DHS H3 is Stiga EG or Yasaka YE.

I have also played with JPEN, I like CPEN much better for RPH capability.

when i used cpen i though one of the best rubbers i liked on fh was h3, absolutely awesome for blocking, short balls, serves, and loopdrives (esp against bottomspin). it lacked when it got into a rally stage, but for the first few balls, its pure bliss. another i really liked was 999/cannon, similar to h3 in some perspectives i guess, but much better for loops and rally, and not as great for serves, shortballs, and bh blocks.

For me it depends on the blade a little. H3 on med/hard blade and 999T/saviga on med/soft blade. I prefer H3 woth firm support and 999T need the catapult from the blade...... so a tie. but I definetely like tacky topsheet for servicing.

I haven't being pratice much recently, so the softer blade is more forgiving until I get back my touch. good luck

For the violin, I guest H2 or H3!

then how would you know? if you dont play penhold then you cant say such things. a lot of penhold players use h3 on their forehand and before wang hao switched to skyline he was using h3. so what are you talking about?

Interestingly enough the poll shows that H3 is a winner (with G666 and 999/Saviga a close second). But it seems that everyone is agreeing that 999 National is best! Any reasons you guys like your rubbers so much?

just wondering, which one of these rubbers will produce the highest arc when graze looping?  so i guess the rubber should be the most tacky and have the hardest sponge...

i think less tacky and more "bouncy-hard" would produce a high arc.  999 has a fairly high arc.

wouldn't a tacky rubber be better for high arc?  since when you loop, you do an upward swing, and being able to have the ball stick onto the rubber should lead to a more upward starting motion for the ball...  that's how the logic plays out in my brain... might be wrong

It depends, a Euro-esque Chinese rubber (like the Inspirit) will be able to get the high arc going but not the spin. My experience with the 999 is that its high throw against topspin but low throw against backspin.
