How many balls do you guys go through in say a week? A friend of mine and I have been going through a ball every 8-10 games and it's pretty annoying.

What balls are known to last pretty long? And also what balls do you think are the best?

Almost everyone I know uses the DHS Athens balls, but I think these kinda suck. They seem much thinner than other balls I've tried like the Sunflex 3 star and these cheap Prince 3 star my friend got at the local sporting store.

Recommendations?

The balls have been laughing at me when I hit lately as if to ask, "Is that all you have Mr. Zai?"

I've found the Dawei 3-star and Doublefish 3-star and Nittaku 3-star to be the most durable and kindest. They don't laugh as loudly.

I have found the Double Fish to be the most durable, although I cracked one  clean in half with a hardbat smash yesterday.  Gamblers are also pretty good.  I played a friend hardbat in a basement with nearby walls last week, and I think we went through 5 Nittakus before resigning to play with Newgys the rest of the time to save cash.

I played with Nittaku 40 Top Ball (good practice ball), with Nittaku Premium 40 (great tournament ball), Butterfly 40 (an OK practice ball), Stiga Practice Ball, Double Fish 3-star etc. Nittakus could be rather fragile, but on average I break just one ball every 2-3 sessions... if nobody steps on them, of course.

Doublefish 3* and Gambler 3* are the best quality to price ratio by far!!!  I find them better in quality even to Nittaku 3* Premiums!

Really good balls let you focus on the play and they don't take your attention away from the game.   True bounce, reliable and predictable surface grip, good hardness and weight make your rubber and blade respond more closely to what you expect when making your shot.

TSP 3* -- Durable but feels a bit light so that the impact on the racket isn't quite on.  I've transitioned them to my training ball pile.

Nittaku Premium -- When spot on, no ball feels better but they seem short lived.  I break at least one and frequently two in an evening - especially if the room has concrete walls within 15 ft of rear edge of the table.  Sometimes it seems like you get a bad run of balls that feel a bit light and off.

DHS Athens -- Heavy enough with softer feel.  Good ball that seems durable.   I have no qualms playing this ball and I play well with it but I prefer a crisper ball feel.   This ball seems better for spinning than smashing as you don't feel the softness as much.

Double Fish 3* --  Very good bounce, good hardness, good surface grip and reliable feel with every shot, good weight, and pretty durable.  They seem to last 2 to 3 times longer than Nittaku Premium and they are cheaper.  These are my primary ball right now and I am keeping my Nittaku Premiums in reserve for special occasions.

Stiga 3*  -- I am not that fond of this ball.  It feels heavier and less responsive.    I've not cracked one but I've only used it when the other guy was supplying the ball.  Not a bad ball, but I just am not as comfortable with it as I am with others.

Peace 3* -- Korean. Great ball.  Great bounce, hitting feel, good weight, good surface grip and durable.   I don't know where to get them but I've been given one and have played with a few, and was always very happy with them.  I'd have to buy more to get a better idea on consistency, but I would buy them without hesitation.  Great ball.

729 3*  -- Seemed to be a pretty good ball.  I don't like them as much as the Nittaku Premiums but nothing stands out as a clear problem with them.  I haven't had a new one in awhile but as I recall, they may not have been as crisp during contact as the Double Fish and Nittaku.

I've only tried a few brands, but I rank them like this, in terms of feel and quality. Not including price because they are pretty similar.
1. double fish 3*
2. dhs 3*
3. butterfly3*

Same, I really want to try double fish. They seem very good from what people say and they are also economical. Butterfly, Nittaku etc. are so expensive!

I think I will continue to get a few DHS because everyone in my school club wants to play with them. But if double fish is good I will use them for my own personal use.

It would be cool if stores sometimes sell sample packs or variety packs where you get one of each brand or something and you could try them all out!

Double fish 3* is durable however has very hard feel. I prefer Gambler 3* for hitting feel and durability

I got some double fish, will try them later tonight. DHS and Double Fish are both quite economical. Euro/Jap balls are really expensive. I'd probably only buy these on sale...

The Nittakus are sweet, but I suggest using the balls used in tournament play to reduce the learning curve.

729 *** take abuse and keep taking it - the Die Hard of TT balls, but they fell so friggin' light and soft! I do not enjoy playing with these.

I prefer balls with a heavy, solid feel. These qualify...

BTY *** ..... Great ball, huge logo, expensive and they crack often enough
Nittaku *** Great ball, nice heavy feel, but they break too often and are REDICULOUS expensive.
2X Fish *** Great ball, Ok price
Athens *** Ditto
Gambler *** Platinum, too bad they are not ITTF approved, they are by far the longest lasting balls with similar feel to Nittaku, but are a dime a dozen
TSP *** Perfom like a somewhat lighter version of BTY *** and last the same

A few others...

Stiga *** Get real, try another ball
Sportcraft *** Not really a true 3 star, but OK for practice and durable

lol, how would you compare to DHS? they are considered the to chinese people. but double fish is cheaper

Posted By: takaaki
Date Posted: 12/18/2007 at 11:49am
for the price, doublefish 3*** is the best.

that said, none of the 40mm balls are as good as they were when they were 38mm.

they all crack more than before and, more often then not, they are not round.

whenever i play, i generally play 2-4 hrs. at a time and i usually go thru at least 2 balls each time.

I never like DHS much, I think they feel too soft. The double fish feels much sturdier.

hey Guys,

According to the ITTF Minutes, point #6
http://urlcut.com/hardballs - http://urlcut.com/hardballs

there is a true hope of the DHS ballls becoming HARDER and thus more DURABLE very soon, -- just what we desire so much !!!
To check if the balls improve in quality, we have to look out the DATECODE on the DHS boxes when buying.Once the datecode is anything after September 2007   -- it is a sure sign of the improved balls.
-----------------
Is there anybody who`s already happened to try the "newly designed"DHS balls ??? Post here your impressions please !!

Thanks
Igor

PS\\ Below is the clue how to read datecodes on ball boxes \ cartons (the encoding system effective for all ball brands as of Jule 2004)

A=1
B=2
C=3
D=4
E=5
F=6
G=7
H=8
I=9
X=0

For example, if you see four letters on a box
XF XG = 06 07 ===> Production Date: June
2007
