I have a question for you. do you ever play in sand paper blade and if so how fine should be the sanding paper?
Here's mine i make it today. More people use this for game betting like the harbat.

Admittedly, this is the first time I ever heard of such a bat. As to your question, depends on how smooth you want the ball to end up with.

| There used to be alot of sandpaper blades in the 50s. They do sand the ball down and they don't make much spin. |

Playing with sand paper blade is an art. And a good exercise without too much stress on your muscles and less pain. One good tool to use for developing and correcting your form . Need to use very cheap ball coz' they easily break. Hi Fatt, No, I am not pulling your leg or jerking your chain. LOL The sandpaper bats used to come in four blade sets. When you bought a cheap table, they would sometimes throw in a set of bats. At the Senior Games, one old guy came with his fav bat, yepp, sandpaper. I didn't have the heart to tell him he couldn't use it. @Gatz, The sandpaper you used looks very close to the originals. Who do you find that still uses those? Have you ever tried a regular hardbat? The sandpaper bats are not legal for hardbat competition. The sound they make is very distintive. |

The rallys could be long because all the bats I have seen were very slow and made little spin. You will not learn much about modern strokes with these bats. Some of the best hardbat players in the world could not make the change to sponge when it came out because the strokes are so different. There are some very good hardbat players that even play in sponge events. People have trouble playing them because of the fact hardbats ignore most of the spin. |

I assume the ball will consume very fast due to the abrasion.

@Addoy, Two color rule does not apply to hardbat. In fact, I don't think "any" rules apply to sandpaper. LOL |

I would like one with 80 grit.......... the equivalent of gluing small stones to blade. Actually, a gentleman recently started playing at the club and until recently used a sandpaper paddle for basement play. After he went to another club first they made (convinced him to change) to a legal setup. He is now playing with Dr. evil ox both sides. There's also the NO Bat competition whereby players slap at the ball with their hand like handball! I entered one of these events in NYC. Inbetween matches I sanded down my palms.

If you look on the ITTF Museum website http://www.ittf.com/museum/indextech2.html there is a drop down box at the bottom of the page and one of the options is wood bats: sandpaper. The sandpaper bat was in use until it was banned in 1959, as a result of the bat standardisation rules being introduced. It's abrasive surface did wear out table tennis balls quicker. The style of play to use hardbats effectively, be they short pips or sandpaper would take some getting used to. When I tried hardbat, I had no problem with my backhand, but forehand was harder to get used to. You can forget playing euro style brush loops, which developed as a result of inverted sponge. |
