Hi,

A guy from my club told me that his Tenergy 05 was dissapproved by an official referee because it was too thick. It only had two layers of regular voc free glue on it.

Thats impossible. MAX is 2.5mm, and tenergy is only 2.1 at most, so thats impossible, unless he lied to you and he used speed glue~

dude please stfu. Max is not 2.5. The max thickness of the sponge depends on thickness of the topsheet. Together max is = 4mm. So when the thickest sponge is 2.1 , topsheet is 1.9. When the thickest sponge is 2.6 the topsheet is 1.4.

You don't know a thing about TT .

The maximum thickness of a rubber is 4 mm (topsheet + sponge)

Max is 2.3 mm

There are rubbers that have sponges as thick as 2.6 mm (Donic Supersonic etc.)

So it's absolutely not impossible! The topsheet could be 2 mm thick and make the rubber 4.1 mm and also illegal. I hardly doubt that Tenergy which is quite soft has a topsheet that's 2 mm thick!

Ok, my mistake.. I haven't tried Tenergy, I was just told that it felt quite soft.

I meant rubbers marked with "max" when I was saying that max equals 2.3 mm

it doesnt have to be 2.3. for example dawei inspirit max varies between 2.3-2.5

Didn't know that, but that's an exception in that case.

Well, for all euro and japanese rubbers max equals 2.3 mm

How do you know that?

And if it really is, so what? Then he doesn't play "max", he plays 2.5 mm..

And how the h*ll are you supposed to see the difference between 2.3 mm and 2.5 mm without having one of each and comparing them? It's a veeeery slim difference..

Guys, i think you are not listening to each other and discussing different things.

Tenergy could be almost illegal if the overall thickness (let's forget about what is the sponge thickness and simply talk about overall thickness of the rubber) is 3.9 - 4.0... and we were told here on the forum that it happens quite often

Then add two layers of glue and you can get smth thicker than 4.0 - by rules, the measured thickness includes the glue!!

I read myself that at some recent ITTF ProTour a couple of paddles were disqualified exactly because the overall thickness of the rubber was 4.1 - mostly due to the fact that the rubber right out of the bag was 4.0.

The manufacturers were advised not to do that anymore - Butterfly even posted a note on their website saying that they apologize and will implement new checks in their production line to make sure that the resulting thickness of their rubbers is never greater than 3.8-3.9

I better get my ternegy measured because i thinkk i got like 3 or 4 layers of rubber cement on it :(

Does any one know a good way to remove rubber cement without leaving VOC's? Does lemon Oil leave VOC's? or just that smell?

Lixiao - I don't doubt that you know a lot about tt, but you have to do better research on some things before you say that it's abolutely right, and everybody else is wrong. I really don't think that pro tt-players like Timo Boll could use a normal sriver-topsheet + 2.5 mm sponge and glue it a billion times without making it >4 mm thick in total..

Skyline - no need to be rude..

On topic: it's possible that the Tenergy is 4 mm in total out of the package since it's not supposed to be glued. The referee could be wrong, or he could have used so thick layers that the total thickness is above 4 mm..

Probably after applying few layers of VOC glue and it increases the thickness.... I have heard people applying few more layers of VOC glue to increase the thickness of rubber. They said it has the speed glue sort of effect...

I just measured two max Tenergy's on two different blades 1.) 3.81mm, 2.) 3.83mm.
The rubber sheet is actually thicker where the logo is at, by the handle and extends across the blade and this is the only place to measure a sheet when the rubber is on the blade.  It is part of the ITTF stamp and Butterfly logo.  I can't accurately measure the rubber lip, becasue it is too small.
This means that the actual thickness is less than what you can measure
accurately.

I measured the offcuts with calipers in three areas to get an average. I got 3.77 for one and 3.84 for the other sheet, both black 2.1

Back on topic : Silvalis mentioned that it measured 3.8mm. But i think that it wouldn't be all 3.8mm. Some would hit 3.9mm im sure. Especially if its one of the first few batches before Butterfly modified.

And liXiao, your knowledge really isn't as extensive as you think it is. Forums tell you this much but it might not be always 100% right. Don't be thick and act like you are always right because you seem like a nice guy most of the time - you are obviously wrong on this topic. Max sponge isn't = 2.5mm. It just means that they give you the maximum sponge thickness with the topsheet to make 4mm. Heh. And top players don't use 2.5mm. imagine 2.5mm with the sriver topsheet. I would think that it already exceeded 4mm. If it didn't, just wanted to tell you that top players regularly glue AT LEAST 6 or 7 layers of speed glue.

I can personally confirm that Timo doesn't use 2.5mm. At least not in the Singapore Open.

Or maybe he lied to me or was using his practice bat and not his main bat while warming up for his match.

I'm sure there would be some variation, but from what I've seen and heard 3.8 would be the mean. I also checked a few other offcuts - Bryce 2.1 was 3.79, Sriver EL Max was 3.80mm...

I thought that he used 1.8 or 1.9 thickness as with the amount of glue the top players apply it would simply be far to thick and definitely banned by the referee.
I think 2.5 is just rediculous, it would never be allowed.
