also, CCTV5 starts their coverage tomorrow (tuesday, apr. 28) at 11:30 am beijing time.  that's late tonight here in north america (11:30 pm here on the east coast).

to find their schedule in english, go here: http://tvunetworks.com/watchTV/index.html

go to the right side of the page to find TV GUIDE.  click that and on the drop-down menu choose CCTV5 and then the time zone that you are in.

Just a quick notice :

From what I understand CCTV5 will not start their live coverage before the 30th and
on the 28/29th they will be showing matches from the last WTTC (49th).

There's a beta version for the Mac (OS 10.5.x). It's 7:20 pm Pacific time & I'm watching Zhang Yining vs Li Jiawei (SIN) on my MacBook Pro. Dang! This is gonna be a time waster.

itTV on ittf.com is up and running and showing today's matches (slightly delayed). So far it's mixed doubles and men's singles, all early qualifying of course. Table 2 is the camera table currently. Only one angle and a bit high, but at least one can have full-screen with pretty good quality.

WTF is going on with all that drumming and chanting? For crying out loud that would drive me insane... what is wrong with applauding between points and letting the players concentrate? Angry

from the website-- what gets me is that flags are prohibited and signboards are too, but big ass drums and whistles and yelling is ok...
  1. The notice of the banner and the signboard is prohibited.
  2. The use of assistance flag that a corporate name, the school name, and the group name in the seat enter is prohibited.
  3. The national flag is prohibited from projecting. But, the flag shake it by the hand is not restricted.
  4. The whistle and drum is not restricted. However, obey instructions obediently when judging the chief hearing examiner hinders the game, and noting it.
  5. The stick balloon is not restricted. However, the one that corporate names other than the rally sponsor entered is not admitted.

F***!  You are goddamn supposed to put the mic on the table, not next to the drums.  WE CANT HEAR ANYTHING.

First olympics was ruined with horrible angle.  This time, the angle is still pretty bad but it has gotten worse.....HOW THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO WATCH WITH NO SOUND????

Are these people even watching their own broadcasting to see if everything is going alright???

Guys, is there something we can do, write to them, etc.?(2004 Olympics, and other world championships were really good...but this SUCKS.)

We want a mic on table.(hopefully they'll take care of replays and camera angle changing on later rounds.)

Here you can see that Eurosport is broadcasting it from the 2nd of May.It starts at 8.00 am (UK time).I see on http://www.ittf.com - www.ittf.com that there are some women and men singles also some mixed doubles but they are so retarded(sry to say that but it's true). They play like real noobs. They just can't return a serve and they make some very funny mistakes very often.

First time I watched the Serbian - Karakasevic.

Had quite a lot of trouble against Kentas serves.  Also had trouble doing some of the more simple stuff like serving, pushing and smashing.  Poor guy, no coach...  He doesn't look like a table tennis player.  Bit on the chubby side for such a quick sport.

I'd p*& my pants having to return Kenta's serves, in slow motion I still dont know what the hell they are!

Maze is looking in form.  he whipped out a few in a row of his trade mark sidepin backhand winner loops from a couple of metres back from the table that just looked bloody aMAZING.  He had some asian dood coaching him - Ive never seen before, then right at the end you can see his old coach talking to him.

Poor Korean fellow just couldnt get a shot on the table.  I know that feeling in a big tournament, every shot you go for you miss that usually expect on the table.  Even more when he would get a good shot on he didnt seem to have as much instinct to prepare for its return as the top 20 do.

I am totally in the same boat, and thats why I believe every player wants to improve needs to throw themselves in the deep end as much as possible - more than having a coach feed a ball back to you.

Maze didnt look like he had any body trouble too, which is great sign..

Does anyone know what rubbers he is using?  The look like white sponge on his usal maze alc.  Im guessing bryce speed.

Kan Yo, Sayaka, and Fukuhara are out. Mikie Tasei has to play Liu Shiwen again and I hope she does well. Amazingly Kaii Yoshida has an excellent draw. If he wins, and then plays the Winner of Zhang Cao, that could mean he makes it too quarters, where he will play Maze. I cant wait to see Kenta, Ma Lin match.

Its from the Jin Kwon Lee match at around 22 minute ITTF vid. Maze looks so much better and comfortable in this game. I hope he can keep it up and create some upsets.

Feng Tianwei will play Li Jie tomorow, Yu Meng Yu will play Liu Jia, while Sun Bei Bei will play Li Jiao.

Although Feng won Li 2 times before, I'm still abit scared. Yu won Liu once during 2006. Sun lost to Li once, so I don't have much confident in tomorow's Sun's match.

The ITTV broke another standard by not showing us ANY of today's major upsets. Good job.

You mean they should have known in advance that Samsonov, Ryu, Oh... would lose? Did you expect that?

Kenta over Kara and Gacina over Kan Yo were upsets and can be seen on itTV.

By the way, what's up with Crisan???

It seems they only have cameras trained on 1 or 2 tables during the preliminary rounds. It just happened that there were no major upsets on those tables. (besides, upsets by definition are difficult to predict) I certainly would have liked to see more of the top 20 players, but I still appreciate them providing free access. Hopefully they'll cover more matches during the last 4 days.

I mean this is THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. The matches are televised on more than one table. It's not that complicated. I said MAJOR upsets.  Wouldn't you have liked to see Oh Sang Eun's  match or Ryu's??? What is wrong with asking that over Kan Yo or Wang Hao? And by the way I would have LOVED to see Crisan's match. In case you asked what's up with his health, well he is tired and his back may have been acting up again. Thanks for the counter.

I just hope that some Euro or Korean TV companies filmed that - perhaps some of our Korean members could go and search Korean forums, see if they have the Ryu Seung Min upset  or Oh Sang Eun match?

Sure it's the worlds, but this is table tennis not soccer, and it was the round of 64, and there are dozens of matches (+ women + doubles) - who's gonna pay for the cost of taping every match on every table? You don't even have that at the big tennis majors.

I just feel we're all getting a bit spoiled here - can't any of you remember what things were like just a few years ago? All the whining and the sense of entitlement is kind of ridiculous.

They televised virtually every match at Olympic Games, right? Of course, not every table is "worthy" but it was still not enough matches...

2005 Shanghai, they recorded a lot of early round matches. I admire your capacity of sucking it in and not whining. I sure can't seem to do it. Maybe you could patronize us some more... go on.....

By the way, just to be clear, the thing that set me off was the ITTF's BS statement that they're going to break standards. They promised us something, hence the sense of entitlement, and they didn't deliver.

The Olympics were great, but actually the maximum was 4 matches televised in parallel, with no more than 8 tables in use in each session. At these Worlds there were 16-24 matches being played simultaneously (yesterday, that is).

At the Olympics the field was much smaller (and there was no doubles), and players like Samsonov, Ryu and Oh didn't even have to play a round of 64 because they were seeded out. In singles there were never more than 4 matches going on at the same time. And of course the economics of the Olympics are a whole different story from those of a puny TT worlds...

Also, you guys need to distinguish between ITTF, the host broadcaster, CCTV, BOCOG for the Olympics... it's easy to blame "them" but who exactly are "they"? As far as streaming on ittf.com (as opposed to CCTV on sopcast etc.) is concerned, this year does seem to represent another big progress over previous years. The quality also is higher than last year.

There's supposed to be 2 TV feeds starting tomorrow, and the number of matches played simultaneously will gradually decrease from 16 to 2, so that should help to make more people happy.

That said, I too hope that Korean TV had some cameras there to capture the good and the bad of their athletes.

Just so dissapointed that you could not find the big name's matches, like Ma Long, WLQ and such.  ITTF and the tournament organizer just have no clue what TT audience want.

Wang Hao's first-round match was shown.

And did it ever occur to you that during these first days they are showing a variety of players because they know that the big names will dominate the final days anyway? It's about showing TT as a worldwide sport, not an all-Chinese affair.

I have made a wireless 8-cam real-time H264 live stream system with a recording capacity of DVD quality movies for 3 months 24/7,  all under US$50,000. I am sure ITTF with all the sponsorships they've got plus broadcasting rights could afford more than that. Plus, WTTC does not reach even a month and the entire system is reusable.

I think it  comes down to the fact that the ITTF is the INTERNATIONAL governing body of the sport, and this is the biggest table tennis event there is.. and they can't even cover a fourth of the matches in any division. Especially mens and womens singles which are the most popular. I think they should be able to do more. What they are doing is great, but it's their responsibility to do so IMO. If they can change all the rules to the game, they should be able to cover the world championships at least a little bit more.. hm?

I have no knowledge of video or broadcasting production nor of the ITTF budget for such things. I also am not sure I understand all of what you describe above, but it seems that the itTV matches involve at least 3 or 4 cameras. 1 or 2 are from fixed angles and 2 are handheld by roaming cameramen. I'm assuming there is also a producer who controls which shots are used, but perhaps that is not done live. In any case, that involves multiple cameras with a few paid professionals to cover a single match...different from what I think you're describing.

Does anyone know how ITTF is funded or what their budget is? I assume we subsidize them in part whenever we buy something with the ITTF stamp of approval, but for me personally that is probably on the order of pennies. Since my contribution to the ITTF coffers is minimal, I can't bring myself to complain about their video coverage. It might be different if I'd donated $100 or something.
