But in china there are two different types of short pips which US all refeer to as short pips. this has confused me a little, if anyone can explain. i think one is also calles raw pips, and is a little spinnier or something. experts please?

I think the "raw pips" you are refering to may be short pips without any sponge, and the other "short pips" is actually a short pip topsheet with sponge. Both are really short pips. In USA short pips without sponge is called Orthodox rubber or OX, while the term short pips is generally used with sponge. Maybe this helps, maybe not.

the diffrent kind are (as far as i know) short pips, which are very short (raw pips), and mid long pips, as we call them in germany.

raw pips are in between short and medium pips. Short pips are just short pips.

What is the most popular SP the pros use and on what sponge thickness and degrees?
I've heard most are modeled after the Friendship 802 or -40. This is what I use. I wonder how true it is.
Any comparisons?
Any thoughts?
Anyone successful with SP on MYTT?
Anyone care?

I care TZ. :)
I've never heard of any successful 802 player who was shakehand.. unless ding song really used 802. But he was a chopper. But if you look at all the penhold pips players... a LOT of them use good old regular 802.
The SP i see the most amongst professionals is TSP Spectol of some kind. Hou Yingchao even chops with it. If you are a fast attacker on the BH.. a thick sponge is used. Blocking, a medium ranged sponge is more common- 1.4-1.9 . I personally use Spectol 2.0mm.. and I use flat hitting almost exclusively. Ball acceleration is the name of the game. The cool thing about Spectol is if you get really good at using it, it has a nice deception factor. I'm still tapping into it. But This is my permanant BH rubber as of now. I'm relatively successful with it. But its one of those rubbers that takes a while to learn all the secrets and fulfill all of the prophecies.
To answer your comparison question.. I used 802 when I played penhold... and i think the seperating factor of the popular shakehand players vs penhold players using pips is the way the pips are alligned. 802- the pips are alligned horizontally. Spectol- vertically. I think it's something that only really matters at a higher level.. but every vertical vs horizontal SP I've used i can tell the difference, and vertical is almost always noticeably more comfy to use. I've only used a few though.
Speedy from here at MYTT was kind of my SP guru when I was asking about them before I started using them. He's a SP player (shakehand, BH), I think around 2200 level if I remember right. from the video I've seen of him play.. he's very agressive, and quite successful with SP.
