What do you all think of this new training program?

http://www.tabletennisuniversity.com/ - http://www.tabletennisuniversity.com/

I believe it is sponsored by those who produce the Table Tennis Master DVDs, which I have found quite helpful.  http://www.tabletennismaster.com/ - http://www.tabletennismaster.com/

I imagine any feedback on this online training program would be helpful to members of this forum.

  • A strange (but 100% proven) way to guarantee yourself a more accuracy.
  • Where to aim your counter loops so that you hit the table everytime.

What bull sh!t

"University"?  Come on.
I don't think they have seen those ordinary Chinese "kindergarten" kids trained in that youtube video.

Poor marketing headline,  no more time to waste

I think it could be useful if you have the money for it.

I prefer to go  to a club and train with a coach or even practice with someone whose skill is better than me.  There is no short cut in table tennis.

There's no real way to learn table tennis effectively through online instruction unless you're already getting coached and want some supplemental material, and even that is questionable. This course sounds ridiculous. Get a good coach instead and get ready to WORK...

how is the professor going to correct you when you're doing something wrong Confused

Well, not everyone can afford (or has access to) face-to-face coaching.  I enjoyed their looping and serving instructional dvds and felt they were put together quite well.  Granted their marketing is cheesy.

But I'm wondering if anyone has gotten instruction from TTU and can report back.

Hey guys, just came across this thread here and wanted clear up some questions/concerns...

We never said there was shortcut. In fact, we make it very clear that in order to improve you need to be 100% committed and ready to put in the hours of training.

Again, we make it very clear that one needs to be ready to work if they want to become a better player. You imply that online instruction is not effective. Then what good is this forum? Many people here ask for advice and get help, so is that no good?

Not everyone has the luxury of a coach to train with one on one.

The same way people here get help and advice when they need it. With that said, in the future we'll be offering personalized feedback for people who wish to submit videos of themselves playing.

We've just launched and the feedback so far has been very positive. I'm sure as students proceed through the curriculum there'll be someone around here able to give a report.

Thanks very much for posting to this thread!  I think it's great that you're promoting the sport in the way that you do.  Good luck with this new program.  I hope down the road you'll have some stuff for penholders as well. : )

It's easy to be overly critical when sitting behind a keyboard. I have been guilty of it on more than one occasion (see my Brian Pace T-05fx review comments. Embarrassed)

Personally, I can say that I found the "Table Tennis Mastery" DVDs to be the most helpful instructional tools since my coach went back to Korea. Assuming this "Table Tennis University" will be of similar (or perhaps better) quality, I think it's potentially a great resource.

Video instruction is not the be all, end all of learning the game, of course. An experienced, high-quality personal instructor will obviously always be superior. But for those of us who do not have access to personal coaches for whatever reason (and I would presume that would be many of us in the U.S.), I think the Mastery series is a beneficial substitute (and perhaps even a good supplement to "real" coaching).

The fact that they perhaps go a bit far in their superlatives is simply incidental to marketing, IMO. Hell, many of the people on this forum throw thousands of dollars at Butterfly products without Butterfly even bothering to blow the corporate smoke up their heinies, and without their products making any substantial contributions to their improvement.

Here is a company actually trying to sell people ways to improve, and not just sell products that feed one's imagination.

If only Timo Boll would pose for the website... Ermm  Wacko

If these are the same people that did the mastery dvds and those dvds had practical value to them then I think that it would stand to reason that this program if you will, would also have value.  How much value always remains to be seen though.  I would be very interested in learning more about this program.  And you have to consider this: If you try out this program for a month and dont like it then you cancel and at the current price you lose about thirty bucks.  A lot of people pay more than that for a single sheet of rubber (I know I have Embarrassed).  What do you have to lose?

I can see this as being useful for people who already have a table in their house, a laptop to look at while at it, and a robot and/or training partner to play with, yet lack a coached better player who will devote their time for money or interest to coach them, in other words, people who have no better alternative.

This is great if you cant afford $50-$80 per hour coaching or you do not have coaching available to you in your area. Or you have a practice partner.

I signed up with TTU a little earlier.  I  haven't had much opportunity to explore their site fully but this is what I can tell you so far.  The videos are of excellent quality and clarity and the coach obviously knows what he's talking about.  They provide you with free access to the mastery videos so you can make use of those and all videos can be downloaded onto your computer although I have not tried this yet.
It has what i guess you could call a forum so you can discuss things with other members about the lessons or other things as well.  The instruction videos don't come all at once, you get one per week which I think is a good idea but at the same time if you already have a grasp of certain things then it will probably be a little frustrating to wait for the next one so you can learn but I don't mind myself.  The only thing so far for me is that it can be little hard to understand the coach sometimes because it is obvious that english isn't his first language.
Thats about all for now except I should mention that TTU offers quarterly prizes for people who improve the most during that time period.  You have to take a video of yourself at the beginning and then the end of the quarter and send it in.  Although the only thing with that, what if someone is already pretty good and they pretend to be a lower level inorder to appear to make more progress so they have a better chance of winning?  Its possible, but hopefully no one would stoop to that level.
I'll try to give more info on this as I make use of it in the coming weeks and months.

Thanks for the pricing... and your condescension. Unlike your obviously superior brain, I don't read all details and retain them fully at all times. I truly apologize.

29.95 is the price right now, but they say that that price will not last for too long.  It will probably go up once they get more well known and develop a reputation with players.

I love this bit:

"But know this... the $29.95 price won't last. It's an introductory offer, meaning we're going to raise it whenever we're ready, without warning."

LOL

In all seriousness though, this TTU is interesting and will no doubt do good for some people.  And with the internet being what it is nowadays I suppose something like this was bound to happen.  But I'm not kidding myself, I know it's unlikely I'll ever be an "elite" table tennis player because I'm not "100% committed", so I'll stick to being one of the "wanna-be table tennis players clogging the bottom rungs of the food chain" and being "counter-productive" "jerking around, hitting loops and smashes."

But I don't take all the above quotes to be a personal attack on me (I do really Angry).
