I will not recommend staying nearby. There is one good Hotel 10 min away by car. Find a place in Arcadia or Alhambra.

Hilton San Gabriel is pretty nice:

http://www1.hilton.com/en_US/hi/hotel/LAXSGHF-Hilton-Los-Angeles-San-Gabriel-California/index.do - http://www1.hilton.com/en_US/hi/hotel/LAXSGHF-Hilton-Los-Angeles-San-Gabriel-California/index.do

If you want something within walking distance, Budget Inn is only two blocks from LATTA, three blocks from the tournament venue and four blocks from Gao Jun TTC:

Budget Inn
10038 Valley Blvd, El Monte, CA 91731.  Tel:  (626) 941-0030

I have stayed in this motel before.  It's okay for the money, not great, not terrible, on par with most Motel 6 out there.  The area in general has been a lot safer than before.  I would not be worried about crime if you choose to stay nearby.  That said, there is not a lot of fine dining and entertainment options within walking distance.  There's a movie theater and a bunch of fast food joints, and that's about it.
If you have a car I'd recommend the Hilton, as it's in the heart of San Gabriel valley where many great Chinese restaurants and shopping are located.  The Santa Anita Mall area is also excellent with many fine shops and a nice mall.

It's kind of sad in a way. My inner-conspiracy theorist thinks that this is WAY too convenient for USATT. LA Open one ups the US Open, we will show you for trying to one up us!

I think it's bad for US table tennis though. It's not like the good players are going to be holding clinics for North American youth players or even playing against North American players. They'll just be playing each other and saying "oh look how much better our countries table tennis programs are than yours" and the audience will be a bunch of amateur table tennis players that will be sitting there watching instead of training and playing themselves. Aren't we already watching the rest of the world outdo us in table tennis? I get that we don't get international players here very often so it would be a special treat to have them here. The difference here is that the LA Open was trying to attract international players with prize money that we could actually interact with and play against. The Tournament Of Champions would just be looking from afar. I can do that on youtube.

Not to mention its going to start on Thursday and NY is expensive as sh**

If the ITTF event finishes on Sept. 2, the competitors should be able to make it to the LA Open as the OPEN only starts at 6 PM on Sunday.. If the tournament has seeded players that won't need to play the Saturday Round robin, they won't have to play until Sunday, Sept. the 4th. That should give them plenty of time to get from NYC to LA (well, actually El Monte)

Would be interesting to know the total amount of players who registered so far...(only approx... like 200, 300, 400, 500???

Do you know if the venue will be available for practicing on Thursday or Friday (9/1 or 9/2)?

Otherwise, I'll play at LATTA on Thursday...

It should be about 300-400 when all is said and done...

As far as I know, the venue won't be available until tournament date.  However, there will be lots of great players warming up at our club for this event.  Smile

if anyone is looking for recommendations for a hotel, I go to that area 2-3 times each year and I always stay at the Comfort Suites at 9488 Valley Blvd in Rosemead.  It probably is not as nice as the Hilton mentioned in an earlier post but is a nice and comfortable hotel in that area with a reasonable price.

Zaman has been coaching a lot instead of training... The only practice he gets in the U.S. is at our LATTA weekly open round robins.  As a matter of fact he just played the finals this evening against a much-improved Rodel Valle of the Philippines national team... Rodel was down 0-2 in games and came back to 2-2, then down 3-7 in the fifth and stormed back for the win.  It was a very exciting match with lots of powerful counterlooping exchanges.  Regardless of his loss to Rodel, Zaman remains one of the most exciting players in the U.S. to watch in person, because of his all-out attacking style.

At the risk of looking foolish, I've heard that Chuan Chih Yuan is competing in the Open Division...?

I've also heard that there are well over 20 people competing who are rated over 2600...?

These are just rumors I've heard, but even if there's a kernel of truth to them it sounds like it will be a helluva tournament.

Answer to your question # 1:  Chuan is waiting for his American visa for this event, which should be just a formality, but we never know what Uncle Sam thinks.  LOL  Chance of having him at this tournament is about 99%.

Answer to your question # 2:  Most likely yes.  As of last Wednesday, we had about fourteen players rated over 2600, including some top Canadians.  We still have some inquiries from top Asian and European players who do not mind paying the $50 late fee, so our projection of getting twenty 2600+ rated players seems within reach.

Yep, that him!  He's actually a funny person, very jovial.  Some people think he's too cocky, but that's far from the truth.  At our weekly tournaments he would hug any player he fought hard with after the match, win or lose.  He is a classy guy who trained with Timo Boll in Germany for two months during his peak.

Tonight's picture with Rodel Valle of the Philippines National Team:

You guys should be really proud of this event. This is going to be the best event in a long time in the USA. I bet if you can get this going every year it will really start to bring some big named players to our country, which is something that needs to happen- desperately.

I just did a search on LA Badminton Club to view photos of the facility.  Here is what I found on Yelp.
http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/G-CINfPjPZYBiwu5gkftTQ?select=pNY84MWmSKmZUe0SbxeVnw

Do you think the lights will have an effect?  Most table tennis tournaments domestic or international have lights from the top to shine downwards.  The lighting inside this facility is directed at an angle.  I wonder for players that like to lob if this will be to their advantage?  Will the lighting be even where it does not cause shadows?

The lighting at this facility is of the highest standards for badminton tournaments, but unusual for a table tennis event.  However, we already have many local players visiting this venue (since it's only 50 yards away from LATTA), and their opinion is it won't be a problem for most players.

I wish our club had lights like that. 10% of my overheads hit the net because I can't see the shuttle and am blinded by light.

Rodel was about 2324 in 2007 and apparently now is over 2600 since he defeated Zaman.
Zaman was also a national team player. His friend said if he trained, he could be a 2700 level player.

So Rodel will play LA Open? Do you have some more update on the top players? The website's information seems out dated.

In response to this thread at another forum that criticizes LA Open's $200 VIP ticket package:

http://forums.about.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?nav=messages&webtag=ab-tabletennis&tid=32920 - http://forums.about.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?nav=messages&webtag=ab-tabletennis&tid=32920

I would like to point out that we have always had this kind of fund-raising "VIP" tickets for our sports and cultural events for many years.  We market them exclusively to local business leaders who are more than willing to show their appreciation by purchasing such tickets.  On some occasions, the buyers of this kind of tickets are also privately invited to special banquets to meet with our top players, performers and officials.  It's been our traditional way of raising money and identifying future donors for our local events for as long as I can remember.  Smile

I am truly sorry if it looks way out of line for the OP.

Yes, along with Zaman, Rodel has also entered the LA Open.  I do have the access to the list of top players entered so far, but at this moment the TD has his hands full and does not have the time to update the website.

So Rodel will play LA Open? Do you have some more update on the top players? The website's information seems out dated.

Along with Rodel, there are actually 2 other players from the Philippines with him that are rated a bit higher than him. They will be representing the Philippines in the upcoming World Police and Fire Games in New York this weekend.

To All:

More than 300 players have already entered this tournament, which is shaping up to be the most spectacular non-invitational table tennis event in SoCal in the past fifteen years!  There's still plenty of time to enter, so please plan to spend this Labor Day weekend playing some table tennis with new friends at LA Open, and soaking up the sun with local beauties at Laguna Beach!   Big smile

Am I glad you posted this William. I would have felt bad buying tickets for the open event on Saturday and not watching the finals in one trip. Big smile

Any chance you might have the start time for the later rounds on sunday?Thumbs Up

Thanks!!!

Laguna Beach is so beautiful. Last time I've been there was long time ago. I miss that Beach!

I was told Chuan Chih Yuan won't be able to make it because of his VISA. He's one of my favorite players. So sad. I bought the ticket on sunday just to watch him. I hope there are other good players to watch.

Yes, as unbelievable as it sounds, Chuan's application for American visa was denied by the U.S Embassy in Taiwan.  I guess Uncle Sam is really afraid that Chuan may remain in the U.S. illegally after the visa expires!  This is a player who travels around the world playing table tennis tournaments for a living... Ouch

So who wants the $12,000.00 now?  Big smile

Maybe he's missing some application materials, as US visa application is very complicated... If that's not the case, then it just shows how unimportant and unknown TT is in the states. That would never happen to a world ranked top 12 player in tennis Dead

World #17 Shen Yanfei from Spain has entered and should be here.  She will be hard to beat even for the top men in the Open Singles.  Hopefully Uncle Sam won't deny her visa...

Richard Ciz can't possibly #15.. That has to be a mistake.. He is only mid 2300's..

To the organizers (and everybody else!):

We should really take advantage of this tournament and share the word with non players as well. This is a great chance to introduce people to what the sport really is, since we don't usually have this caliber of players in an LA tourney. I haven't really seen any advertising outside the TT world.

Some radio ads on public radio would help, or at least trying to make it more viral. The website doesn't have the option to Share on Facebook, Twitter, etc. I just posted about the LA Open on my FB page, but I just realize the video on the main page doesn't work. It would be a good idea to fix this, so people curious about it can at least see some good clips.

There's still one more week, lets try to spread the word!!!

I can not believe the story with Chuan. The visitors will lost in this case. So bad, but the next time the organisers must be more active to help foreigner players to get visa on time. It is just a lesson.
Good lesson. Because Chuan is just incredible player, before time he was at 3rd position in WR.
One of my favourites. Long time I played with Donic Waldner Dicon because he used this blade before to receive his BTY own name blade :)

I'm half disappointed because Chuan couldn't make it.

It's hard to spread words of ping pong to non ping pong players, esp. in the US. You don't see that many people watch a ping pong tournaments. Every time I go to watch a ping pong tournament I see the people I know. I hardly see any new faces. But, this one is worth a watch. I bought tickets for all my brothers to watch this one. I hope there are seats because we'll be watching all day long.

BTW, most of the tickets are sold in the chinese bookstores. I wonder why?

I'm not sure if they already did it, but I'm sure they can get some of the american news channels to have some kind of story on this, as there is more prize money at this than the nationals or us open.

Olivier, you are still coming to LATTA on Thursday night, correct?  Duc and I can't wait to play you... Smile  Raymond Wang will be here too.  (He changed to inverted on his forehand from hardbat, but still beat Zaman 3-0 in our recent round robin... My records against him after his change is 3-25 or so... Unhappy)

wow!! I thought he's at least 2000.  But, then again, I've never watched him play. Can you beat Justin Nguyen? He has improved a lot over the year.

Justin and I are fairly even in practice matches, but in round robins he beats me 4 out of 5 times.  He's a very smart player.

No, I don't think they did it, but it's a good idea. They should be interested since is the first time a tournament like this take place.

Unless my plane crashes or I'm getting sick before the trip... I will be there on Thursday.. What time is a good time to get there to find someone to play.. I remember that last time that I went there, at 5 PM, hardly any players were there.. So, maybe 6 PM is better?? I want to get a decent amount of matches as I haven't played too much lately due to my son's heart surgery 3 weeks ago.  Only started practicing again about a week ago.. In the last month, I played a total of 3 times so far.. Not a whole lot.. I'm playing about mid 2100 level right now and not high 2200 level, but I hope that with some practice in LA, I'll get back to 2200 level..  Right now, I'm losing to players that I used to always beat... It's not that easy to come back from not playing for a few weeks, but I saw some improvements last Friday when I made it to the semi-final of a handicap tournament (1 point handicap for each 100 rating points with a 5 point maximum)..  Won a close match against a 1850 player (who usually is mid 1900's but recently dropped). Had to spot him 4 points per game and still won 3:0.. Kept my nerves after being deuce in both, game 2 and 3... I can't wait to play Raymond.. I think that I have a better chance against him if he has inverted on one side.. I'm looking forward playing you and Duc.. What are you currently using? Still DtecS?

Raymond is a solid 2200 - 2300 level player who can play about 2400 level on a good day.. He MIGHT be keeping his rating low in case that there will be another $100k hardbat tournament.. He'd win that for sure if they'll use his 1800 rating LOL
Raymond is definetely the beat 1800 player in the country without a doubt..

Hi Olivier:

Most players go to LATTA after work, or even after dinner, so I'd say 6 to 10pm is by the far the best time at our club.  I won't be able to get there before 7pm because of dreaded traffic from my direction, but Duc should be there by 6pm.  After we play some, we should head to Gao Jun's place together around 9-9:30pm, so save some energy for more matches.  Smile

Last week alone I used Talon, DtecS and Saviga V ox on various blades including Mat Pro Special, Defplay Senso, Bulldozer and Firewall Plus... My game is very confusing even to myself now, lol!
Still, I managed to get some wins over pretty good players last week including Raymond, Duc and Justin at LATTA, so I guess I am still playing okay...

I should have enough energy left to go to Gao Jun's club.. Well, it depends on the temperature at LATTA.. If it's like in Florida without AC, I don't think that I'll be able to play all that much but if the temperature is lower, I should be ok..

Round robin stage of the Open Singles starts at 6pm on Saturday.  From what I've been told, top-16 players are seeded directly into the main draw, so they most likely won't be playing in the first stage...
