Given the undeniable popularity of the Butterfly Viscaria blade, I thought it would only be appropriate to create a dedicated club for everyone that loves this classic blade. To become a full-fledged member of this club, all you need to do is upload a picture of your Viscaria(s) for everyone else here to appreciate.
Some come on in – show off your Viscaria(s) and join the club... fresh brownies and cold beer is in the back.
To get things started, here's a picture of my Viscarias (or Viscariae/Viscarius/Viscosus, for Tiny):

That handle looks like a Sardius/Intensity Carbon handle with a Stiga sticker. Am I right Rene?

Seeing that the word Viscaria is a Latin form created by botanists, can we say that the plural is Viscariae?
Or maybe Viscaria is already plural, so one blade should be Viscarius or even Viscosus.

This exclusive club is for those who really treasure, keep & play with their Viscarias", right? It's the offshoot of that Moth Club. I'm a diehard member of that "Moth" Club. So, John, this club is not for you. You, like some others, belong to that "Flipper" Club.

what I have now is a donic persson carbotec which is pretty similar. I'd say deep down every viscaria is a persson carbotec wannabe

The shape on the chest of the shirt is already that of the original short sharpened lense - perhaps it's hard to tell when it's not on a handle.

Let me show you my little project. My ambition was to equip an old Viscaria FL with a custom ST handle that should have the dimensions of a Maze ST/Mizutani ST handle but the design of the Viscaria handle. (In terms of playing to me the Maze and Mizu ST handles feel great) In addition I wanted to have a very very gentle "thumb polish".
Therefore an old version Vis FL (1993/96) now got new handle plates. As you can see, the lady has kept her sharpened lense. The weight is ~87g. Here we go:

Taksim'a handle looked a bit like a c-pen Viscaria, but was quite different in construction and playing qualitied. The middle layer was much thicker and the blade was a lot stiffer. In a lot of ways Taksim was more like Iolite.

The questions about new ones vs. old ones, I think the main difference is weight, so if you like them heavier, you may prefer older ones. As with anything else, there is some variation from blade to blade, this was always true, so not all old ones are good and not all new ones are bad, and even a bad Viscaria is still a really fantastic blade.

Vis with T80 did not work for me!
I would go with BF M1 or just reg T05.

Thomasson reporting for duty.
After several ventures to other blades, the "Viscaria" will be my main blade from now on. Sadly enough I let go 2 of my Viscaria only a year ago, thinking I would never like it. 1 old version with black tag and 1 new version with perfect fish scale Here is the old version, the new version is in the box you can see.
I needed time with other blades to finally be able to appreciate this blade:
My main blades in what I believe was the correct order: 1: Donic Alpha Slick (Premade) "2004, 1 competition" 2: Donic Appelgren allplay v2 "2004+2005, 3 competitions" 3: Donic Persson Dotec "2006, 1 competition" 4: Butterfly Photino "2006+2007+2008, 5 competitions" 5: Butterfly Timo Boll ALC (a good one, which seems hard to find these days) "2009, 1 competition" 6: Nittaku Acoustic "2009+2010, 3 competitions" 7: Butterfly Mizutani Jun "2011, 1 competition" 6: Nittaku Acoustic "2011+2012, 3 competitions" 8: OSP Virtuoso "2013, 2 competitions" 9: Nittaku Acoustic Carbon "2014, 1 competition" 10: Butterfly Viscaria "2014.."
Please note that every year has 2 seasons/competitions.
I will add the picture of my latest blade when the new rubbers are in!

A junior broke 2100 with this combo. I wonder about what something not "working" for someone objectively means these days...

I like my ZJK-ALCs, I have two of them, they are very good blades, tried them for a month. But I still like my favorite Viscaria best. There is just something, I'm not sure what. I miss less.

Interesting Viscaria with handle that looks like a Moonbeam. I have never seen one like that.

The one with red lines is a first version, special version or line-painted-in-red version ?
I have an old viscaria side-pinted-in-red version too

I´d say the red one was a mistake in production.

What did people eventually decide about it? This seems like another one has been spotted, so I now believe they exist.

If you follow my link(s) it will always lead you to the blade (red line handle) of member TKMP. If you take a closer look at the pictures showing the blade you will see it is always the same blade. I never saw any picture showing a second one (with red line handle).

So I take it Viscarias can vary in weight quite a bit...~82g to 92g or even more variation perhaps. My question is, is there a general way this effects the balance of the blade? If, say, a blade is on the heavy side, it is more likely the extra weight is in he handle? or the head? Or does it go both ways and there is no way to tell?

After decades of playing and after owning tons of blades including many Viscarias I have concluded that there is no way to tell in advance how they will play. Some people like the scaly look of wood on surface, and two of the best ones I ever had --- stolen out of my bag -- had that look, but the one I have now that is just as good doesn't. I don't think it is weight balance or total weight either (although I don't like the newer super-light ones). It's not the tone they make when you knock them against your head. The only way to know is to play with them. One reason I own quite a few is that I ordered several trying to get one that was as good as the pair that were taken. Currently I have four, one is perfect, one is pretty good, the other two are much less good. That is a tough way to go at 105-130 apiece (the price range over the last couple of years). I wish I had a better answer.

good stuff, Baal, thanks. So I can stop banging the blades around on my head? :-) I thought they might be on to something with that.

Well, if the sound is way off, the blade will be too, but if the sound is right it doesn't mean the blade will be exactly the way you like it. Sadly.

Hi, I would like to show you my Viscaria blades
As you can see, all of them has old black metal tag. Also, they don't have serial numbers. The first Viscaria FL from the right weighs 83.6 g, while the one in the middle is 86.7 g, Viscaria ST weighs 92.2 g. The previous owner of Viscaria ST obviously wasn't satisfied with the thickness of the handle, so he sanded it. I am planning to restore it and I am interested to buy lense of Viscaria ST or the whole handle if somebody here has broken Viscaria ST.
