Hi forum members

Does anyone have any information when BBC (Charlie) will start making blades again? As per his website, the last message posted is from May 2014 in which he said:

I have lost my shop lease so I'm taking a break from blade making until such time that I can reestablish operations.

I have played with some of his blades in the past and his workmanship is extremely good so was keen to try his other blades..

Hope a member from California will know!

Charlie probably has some blades (and blanks) left over from the good old days. Try contacting him by email and ask him if he has something that interests you.

Yes.  Concord TTC is in CA.

My last order from him was about 2 years ago for an Envil with size and shape copy from a Hurricane King.  It's an awesome blade for a combo setup.

when I saw him at iTableTennis it was the first time in many years. unfortunately for this thread that subject didn't come up.

he is a super friendly guy. I would think and believe he would be accommodating to anybody's request if it were possible, time permitting for him

he made me a carbon blade way back in the day...25 yrs ago? he back then already was customizing handles, weights (head heavy, handle heavy), head shapes, overall weights. he also made a "2 speed" blade - back then (!!) - - faster on fh, and control on bh with different woods. he'd ask you what kind of rubber you were going to use specifically then construct the blade to your specs.....way way ahead of his time, imo

and he did a remarkable patching job on a wrecked power drive I had, and he added some super thin 3 ply plywood to protect an old single ply judas wood j/k blade that had a hairline fracture. he does remarkable work

:)

Charlie is truly a grandmaster of blade-making. I have used his blades for almost 4 years now, and in the last two years I am playing with nothing but his blades - highly customized light version of his 9-10-9 line called Tachyon (OFF/OFF+), and all-wood Blaster (OFF). Great control and enough speed for yours truly. I currently have six of his blades but I went through about 20 of them testing and playing etc - some of them I sold, some traded.

Charlie is back and he has been making blades for me to test and sell at my club. I've posted some pics of the blades that I really like. One of them we decided to call Excalibur. This is an 11-ply carbon blade that is great for looping.
The other blade I really like that I'm currently playing with is called Flash Drive 3.0. It's a 7-ply blade that has 2 thin layers of carbon. I would rate this blade an Off- blade. I was playing with Stiga Clipper but I play much better with this blade as it has more control and better feel than the Clipper. The other thing that I would say about Charlie is that the handles on his blades are the most comfortable handles I've ever played with.
Everyone should just send their current blade of choice to Charlie to let him make a new handle for them!

Great! In the last two-three weeks I had been testing a new blade of his - called Quad-Trip. Perhaps I should send it to someone else who is in need of (OFF-) blade with slight vibration. I do not like vibration blade at all even if vibration is next to non-existent.

If you are in US-48 and interested, let me know. I will email Charlie and ask him what is his preference. maybe he would prefer me to simply mail it back.

Blade's weight is 82-83 g, shakehand FL handle. Thickness around 6.7-6.8 mm with 4 cypress layers and three super-thin special carbon layers between them (Charlie calls that material "nano-carbon", I think).

Hey Jim,

Myself and another player have a Quad-Trip as well and he's been playing more with it since he's more of a defensive player. It does have vibration, and although it's a very nice blade I play much better with the Flash Drive and Excalibur. I really wanted to like the Quad-Trip, but it has a lower throw angle than the other 2 blades I mentioned, and it doesn't have as solid a feel either due to the very thin carbon layers. Just curious what you think about the blade?
One thing I did just do however is order 2 sheets or classic hard rubber as I think the Quad-Trip would be a good hard-bat blade to play with. I'm probably around 1900+ as a hard bat player and even though I don't play with it much I do like to hit with it from time to time with some of the 1600 - 1800 players to get them to play more consistently as I can get a lot of balls back playing hard bat. The guy that got me into table tennis was a classic hard-bat player that was rated in the Top 20 in the US many, many moons ago. Playing with him really helped me improve my game, especially against choppers.

I actually think Quad-Trip has a higher throw angle than most of my blades. That probably depends on the rubbers' choice, I guess. Also has a little extra catapult which - due to my style - I am not used to.

Other than that I quite liked it. And as you said - handle is superb; extremely convenient. I think that in that aspect Charlie's blades are second to none, and I have tried 30-40 different blades of more than a dozen brands. Very good control, upper levels of (OFF-) speed range, closer to OFF than to ALL+.

I asked Charlie and he is OK with someone else taking over the further testing.

So if any trustworthy forummer (US-48 please; unless you are willing to pay the extra postal fees) would like to get Quad-Trip for testing (or to buy it) - let me know; I will mail it to you.

Charlie can vary the core thickness of the Excalibur to make it off - off+ if you like. The normal thickness is 5.9 but he made mine 6.0 th speed things up a bit. Just tell Charlie you want an off Excalibur and he can make the core slighter thicker.

Is the Excalibur one of the new blades that Charlie mentioned with nano-carbon?

My playing style is similar to Ma Long (but of course not somewhere near his level) which is looping on both sides.

I intend to purchase a new blade to replace my current one. Since I am new to custom blade, I am looking at something which perform similar to Butterfly Viscaria. I am currently looking at OSP and BBC blades.

Any experts can advise or recommend?

Thanks.

My 2200+ practice partner/nemesis plays with a Viscaria as he likes a solid blade that has pretty good control, and he thought the Excalibur played very well. My son (just turned 15 this week), is 1700+ looper both sides and he now plays with the Excalibur. The 5.9 mm core is a prefect blade for looping both sides. Charlie can make the core 6.0 mm or more to add speed to the blade but then it becomes more of a hitter's blade. The Viscaria and Excalibur both have Balsa cores with Koto outer plies so both are very similar. Charlie's Excalibur is $125 and Butterfly's is $150. You get a great selection of handles (the flared with scoop is amazing), and you are helping support local craftsmen. So take the extra $25 you will save and buy a box of Nittaku Premiums and play with Excalibur as it's a wonderful blade!

According to the description on Butterflyonline.com it states the following:

Viscaria FL
•Combines Arylate fiber features of lightness, flexibility, and shock absorption with the Carbon fiber features of high elasticity and minimal dissipation of energy.
•Koto outer plies & Balsa core.
•Viscaria's compact head size makes it ideal for quick re-looping right off the bounce.

I know what it says and it has been discussed in various forums many time but I believe it is a mistake. Viscaria is too heavy for balsa, it doesn't look like balsa (but kiri) and it doesn't play like balsa. All the other ALC blades which play quite similar like TB ALC, M.Maze or ZJK ALC have kiri cores. Also, BTY websites of other countries for example Germany do not say it is balsa.

Not right! Different family of trees.
Kiri: Paulowniaceae family
Balsa: Malvaceae family
And here is what you can find on OOAK regarding kiri and comparison to balsa:
"kiri: (aka Paulownia, Royal Paulownia, Princess Tree, Empress Tree); A light weight, soft but very tight and torsionally stiff type of wood, mainly used as core veneer. (Almost every Butterfly table tennis blade that is made in Japan has a Kiri core.) More durable, heavier and harder than balsa. (This is one of the main reasons why Butterfly blades are heavier than other manufacturer's blades.) Density .26-35 gm per cubic centimeter. Janka: 250; SG: .26; PCF: 16
This wood is from the Paulownia family. It’s a bit over double the hardness of balsa, but it remains very light-weight. This is a great core wood for faster blades with heavier medial and outer plies. Just like balsa, it cuts down on vibration and makes a blade with a little less feeling than something made with a wood like cypress; just like balsa, it cuts down on vibration and makes a blade with a little less feeling than something made with a wood like cypress; Janka: 250; SG: .26; PCF: 16"

Judging by this

yes, it is made with nano-carbon. Interesting that there is no vibration, right? All the blades with nano-carbon I tried had some vibration - however in this case, probably because it has so many layers, the blade is stiffer because of 10 layers of glue.

Rocketman that's the blade I'm playing with by Charlie. It's a 7-ply blade with 2 thin carbon layers and it's called Flashdrive 3.0. It weighs about 85 gms but he can vary the weight a little depending on what you like. I was playing with the clipper for several months and although I played ok I kept losing to a 2150-2200 looper. I just didn't have the feel with the Clipper I had with other blades. I contacted Charlie and he sent me the Flashdrive. I beat that looper 3-0 the first time I played him with it. The blade has plenty of power but it has much better control/feel than the Clipper. I'm playing much better now after switching to Charlie's blade. He sells it for $80 and it's worth every penny. The handle is also the best I've ever had.

Dave, could you give us a short review on the FlashDrive blade?

Is it stiff or flexy, how thick it is, does it have any vibration, are the outers soft or hard, how's the short game, do you know the woods used for it etc. And of course your impressions on different types of strokes, control/speed etc.

Thanks!

I love the FlashDrive 3.0 blade! It's a 7-ply thin fairly stiff blade that has good control. I would rate it about Off- as far as speed goes. It has 2 thin plies of carbon, and hard koto outer plies. I was playing with Stiga Clipper and doing ok, but just didn't have the great feel I had been used to, so I began looking for an alternative. Decided to give Charlie a call, and timing must have just been right as he was ready to start making blades again. He sent me this FlashDrive and I immediately started playing better with it as I had better feel/control, but still plenty of power to finish the point with. I used to play with a Donic Burn Aratox RS Carbon blade that was similar in weight/thickness/feel, but I think this blade is even better for me as it has slightly more power/throw angle.
You were spot on about the Quad-Trip in saying that it has too much vibration and sometimes is a bit springy. I came to the same conclusion, so I didn't really care for it as much. But the FlashDrive doesn't have that springy feeling and it's perfect for hitting. Charlie said it was more of a hitting blade, but I've played great with the Rhyzm Tech on my BH with it. I tend to brush loop and spin it more than drive it and it's been great for that as well. The best part though is it only sells for $80, and you know how great his handles are. To sum it up it's a solid-feeling blade that has plenty of power, but still has good touch/control.

AcudaDave, would you be able to compare it to say Timo Boll ALC(my current blade), as i do find it to have enough vibration/feel.

Plus doesn't having nano-carbon, like any other carbon dampen the feel?

I'm in the SFV. A couple of days a week at Allen & Sons, and a couple of days at the Vietnamese Community Center, and once in a while at Balboa Park.

You are welcome to test drive the Flashdrive once it arrives if you want to meet up.

I've heard of latta of course, but I've never heard of the temple. Send me a PM with contact info and I'll let you know once the blade arrives.

How is the FlashDrive as compared to the Excalibur?

Flashdrive is a little faster and Charlie thinks of it being more of a hitting blade. I like the Flashdrive but the Excalibur is probably better for looping. I also think the Excalibur has more gears, but they are both great blades.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Currently there are 3 new blades by BBC as follows:

Quad-Trip (OFF- to OFF/ALL+) - 82-83 g
Composition: 7 plys (4 cypress layers + 3 nano-carbon layers)
Thickness: 6.7-6.8 mm

FlashDrive 3.0 (OFF-) - 85g
Composition: 7 plys (5 koto layers + 2 nano-carbon layers)
Thickness: ?

Excalibur (ALL+/OFF-)
Composition: 11 plys (4 koto layers + 2 blasa layers + 1 carbon + 4 nano-carbon layers)
Thickness: 5.9 mm

Yep that's correct. The wood layers of the Flashdrive are koto as well. They are a dyed "rock" koto. He also uses Wenge wood in the handles as this wood is good at being water resistant.

I saw your review and pictures for Excalibur. Are the dyed wood a special kind of koto?

Sorry for my late response.... but only ST for me, even when just testing Smile

This ATTACK JR was for a friend and doesn't have my typical rubbers on it. But from a brief hit with this one and from the ones I tried in the past, I think ALL+ might be fair. Or perhaps ALL.

I should say that when I communicated with Charlie, it turned out that emails from my Hotmail account went somewhere into the void of WWW - probably has something to do with how his email account is set up for junk and stuff. Then I switched to GMail and everything was fine.

So my advice is to use GMail or at least try to use your other email provider (hope you have more than one).

We came up with a slightly larger blade head (~ 1/16th longer/wider), which adds a little more flex, or resonance as Charlie likes to call it. The slightly larger head we decided to call a "P" head for the Plastic ball.

Thanks Jim. It seems so, but in an other way that you think, because Charlie answered to my first email (gmx). Nevertheless your advice (to use an other email-account) helped, because I "spammed" him with 3 additional emails. Maybe as result of these additional emails he gave up (to ignore my email) because he feared to get 10 more emails next week.

Just a advice for those who want to purchase a blade from BBC but stay outside of US. Request to Charlie not to use USPS.

According to Charlie, my blade was shipped on 25 Jan 2016, Monday morning. The item tracking is still in transit since its departure from USPS Facility on 28 Jan 2016 morning till date. I have checked with USPS - their reply is unable to check once the item is out of their facility and told me to check with my local postal service which I did and the item has not arrived at my local postal service. It has been 10 business days and totally no news on the whereabouts of my item.

My advice for those who are outside of US but want to purchase a blade from BBC to put on hold first.

Either you request for a reputable courier that is able to track from end-to-end or take the risk that the blade may never reach your side.

I am requesting Charlie to file a claim as I am unable to do that from my end. I have called and emailed Charlie but no one pick up the phone or reply to email (last reply was 27 Jan 2016).

Anyone who know him in person is able to help?

Thank you.

Very early to worry given since its an international shipment.  I ordered something from Japan in the same time frame and it is still in transit only shows that it arrived at the outward bound duty station in Japan.  Delay's are common other times shipments arrive in record time.  If it does not show  up by end of Feb in your tracking give me a PM and I will talk to Charlie.

1) Mailing something by trackable package with FEDEX or DHL will cost you additional 40-50 dollars

2) I have waited once almost two months for a small package from Hongkong (1 rubber, I think). Another time I mailed a package to Israel and instead of 1 week it took more than 4 weeks, most of that time was spent inside Israel's post system. So it's not really a USPS problem. It just happens once in a while. As long as you know that the package was actually shipped...

By the way, I am already paying additional 40 dollars for the shipment.

According to USPS tracking system, the item has been in transit since 28 Jan 2016.
It departed USPS Facility so does it mean that the item has left the country?

I have not use USPS before so I am not sure how it works. I checked with USPS and their reply is " Unfortunately once the item leaves the U.S. we have no further information that would be available. I would recommend that you contact your Postal Service to possibly obtain additional information" which I did and the the item has not reach my country Postal Service. It should not take so long to to reach my country unless it is not shipped by air freight.

Really? That sounds a bit too much. As far as I recall from shipping blades overseas, without tracking or insurance it was about 12 dollars. So 40 dollars should have bought you one or the other.

I found a post of mine (it was slightly more than a year ago), here it is:

Actual experience:  Mailing a blade to South Africa
Use:  "First-Class Package International Service"
Weight:  7 Oz
Mailing cost:  $12.15  (does not include insurance)
(The value of the blade is declared as $45.)
Bought insurance for that:  $13.65
---------------------------------
Even if the value is $200, rather than $45, the insurance premium remains the same.
Btw, it took more than 2 months for the guy to receive the blade.
$40 is too expensive.

The blade Charlie shipped was returned to Charlie due to the address given by the buyer was not correct.  Charlie is trying to contact the buyer and get his correct address.  The Paypal address was not verified. So this is not an issue about USPS but the buyer providing an incorrect address.

In his initial emails, he mentioned tracking and insurance but based on the tracking number no tracking is confirmed but not sure about insurance.

Thank you lineup32.

I just saw Charlie's reply. Apparently, he emailed to another of my email account.

The address provided is correct. I have also checked with PayPal that for Asian countries, one does not require to confirm or verify the address.

Just an update.

Finally, I received my blade - Excalibur after the confusion during the first delivery.

The quality and workmanship is great! As mentioned a couple of times in this forum, the handle is really very comfortable.

However, I have not test it yet.
