Interesting, aren't there some academic types on this forum - is this valid claim?

I guess I'm one of the academic types.  In general you can learn to improve any number of tasks in response to training if that training includes feedback that allows you to track performance.  So, I am sure that the players can learn to improve their performance at picking out the visual cues -- on the app

I honestly don't know if it would improve performance in actual play.  It might.

Or it might help you pick out the cues as to where William Henzel hits the ball but nobody else, and few if any of us will ever get to play William Henzel (sadly).

I just don't know.

I think I will try it just to see how it goes.  Even if it doesn't work I like the idea of supporting those guys.

Thanks Baal, but when making a claim like this should there be some controlled and verified studies done.

It's a ping pong forum.  I think we shouldn't take stuff that seriously.  Many things get claimed here that have no data behind it.  The world has not spun off its axis.  Sometimes you can provide the data and people still get upset.  I'm about to go and download it onto my tablet, even though I am actually a bit skeptical that it can work.

I love how wonderfully inconsistent I am! In other places I ask to see the science, but here? No way! Just give it to me.

I've downloaded the app and had my first few goes, failing miserably at the slowest speed.

Regardless of anything else, I know that the thing which is having a major impact on my play is what my coach calls "being hypnotized by the ball" - after I hit the ball I keep watching it rather than looking at my opponent to see what is coming next. At least with this app I can focus on William Henzell to the exclusion of everything else. Maybe (and it's a big maybe) I might just learn to look somewhere useful!

Hey Baal, you never know. It might just be fun to play and this is only phase 1 of the project.

There has been research done in related fields. There was a study of pro baseball players where the conclusion was they were very good at anticipating the pitch based on watching the pitchers windup. This is something that hitting coaches teach. For example, a fast ball is thrown differently from a curve ball, so watch for the cues.

The hitters either consciously or subconsciously anticipated the pitch based on cues like arm/elbow position, how the ball is held in the hand, seam orientation, etc.

When the windup was covered up so the hitter could only see the release of the ball from the hand, hitting % dropped dramatically. (I would post the link, but I read it years ago and can't find it)

It should be possible to train people in table tennis to anticipate better just like in other sports.

Another area of exploration is deception. How about when a player can hold off giving cues on which direction they will hit the ball or faking going one way and hitting it another? Phase II?

For example, I was playing in a league team match where in between games I could hear my opponent say to his team "I can't tell where he is hitting".

I would also like to see the app do serves. For example, player serves with the same motion but varying spins. Can you read the spin properly?

I have no idea how effective this game translates into real TT, but it's the best mobile TT game I've played. How well is everyone scoring? I'm around 70% with a score of ~40000 on level 3. I can't figure William out!

I would love to have additional players, as well as an option for BH. Serves would also be cool, but I'd imagine hard to implement.

Studies have shown table tennis helps improve cognitive function in older adults. As we age there are changes in the brain that effect memory, spatial awareness, reflexes, and problem solving. With regular exercise (table tennis) there is a link between age specific cognitive decline and the benefit of the sport. If there is a physician here they could go into more detail of the physiological process.

Baal, what type of tablet are you using. Are you aware you can only tap once for each shot? The window of opportunity starts from the time the ball leaves you til the time it comes back. The smileys up the top will register your tap. I've played it on a range of devices and haven't had an issue. One other person said they were having an issue on an Android tablet. Is that what you have?

Cool app!!!

I can't speak for Baal, but I initially also thought that my taps weren't registering although they were. What threw me off is that the fingertip bulls-eyes (for lack of of a better term) don't register any kind of feedback when you tap.

Perhaps that's something for version 2; if the bulls-eyes lit up or changed color (and/or if there was a clicking sound), it would be easier to know that you have successfully tapped.

There is a click sound when you tap. It can be soft if you aren't in a quiet location. We will think about having the buttons light up.

Here's my score's on level 3 and 4. You get more points (bonus) if you click early.

We are currently submitting an update on both IOS and Android to deal with sensitivity issue people are having on Level 1. The touch sensitivity concerns don't occur at levels 2 and above. For various technical reasons, sensitivity increases with the speed of the levels. Included in the update will be a flash to represent your initial touch.

It's important to be aware that you can't click after the ball is behind you as it will register a selection for the next shot. The window of opportunity starts when the ball leaves you and finishes when the ball comes back. You have to be fast.

On an Android phone and find it is not always registering taps and there is a bug that registers as a tap even if the ball goes on the opposite side.

A good exercise though!!

The update is on it's way so you'll be able to see your taps. There are some other minor fixes.

Lots of people are realizing that they missed the window and their tap is registering for the next shot.

I think having a short delay after the ball leaves the screen before you can register the next ball might be a good idea.

Also, I don't know why but the game crashes a lot for me when it's saving settings and sometimes when touching. It happens a lot more at the low levels. I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S4.

Great idea and app though! I'm looking forward to the updates. I think once it gets polished it'll be an amazing app not just for practicing reading the ball, but for anyone.

Interesting. I am probably the wrong person to comment but I have been using this app for a while now and I have never never had or crash on either of my Android cell phones. I have sometimes been confused by the responsiveness of keys but over time, got used to what I was trying to do, trusted the meritocracy of the program and never thought about it since. So it is good that I never commented earlier and the input sensitivity issues have been validated. That said, even in its present form, I have found the program immensely useful for my actual game and hope others will find likewise. I think that for most people, the challenges will come from practicing against the lefty at high speeds. That I think will significantly challenge and help moat people based on my personal limited experience. Take such anecdotes with a grain of salt of course.

The first update is available for Android users and it's waiting for approval on IOS. After installing the update, you'll get feedback after you make your selection as a flash will appear. It also helps slightly with some of the sensitivity issues on lower levels. There are no sensitivity issues on level 3>. Just make sure you don't click when the ball is behind you as it will count for the next shot. I watched a beginner play and they clicked when the ball was behind them on every shot.

Tassie,

The William Henzell backhand module is out on Table Tennis Edge, but only on Android. Just update your current version and it will be there. IOS users will have to wait the standard 5 days for Apple to approve. It's a little painful, but they have their regulations.

William's backhand looks amazing on the app and you'll get a feel for how a world-class shot comes at you. I'm struggling to read it on the higher levels, which is no great surprise.

You'll be a master at it in about a week. It will be very interesting to keep track of your progress actually. It's nowhere near as easy as the forehand and you can see why he was so hard to play.

I'm really sorry, but it's not available on Windows yet. We've actually paid for technology to have it on Windows mobile however you are perhaps the first person to mention Windows. The focus at the moment is to produce more content on android and IOS to be honest. Look, leave it with me and I'll see what we can do, though it might take a while.

BTW, to everyone who complained about the Phase 1, all problems are resolved. The multiball component is totally responsive on all devices now and you have enough time to make a decision about direction.

There are many more serve return modules coming and multiball as well. Different players and shots will slowly start to appear.

Brett:
While the current serve modules do we orders to train on serve type identification, there is less pressure on reaction time implications.

Suggestion: eventually, could you also add a 'pass-fail' mode in which to pass, one has to not only guess the right serve type, but also do it in a time appropriate for real-life situations. Because, currently, the game does not penalize me enough if I guess right but am very late in doing so.

To all: this update is worth 100-500 USATT rating points depending on current level

slevin, at your request, I can send you our bank account details and you can pay those coaching fees!

People who paid for phase 1 will continue to get free updates. The price has actually increased for people who haven't yet paid and the price will continue to go up slightly after each update. It will eventually be a very expensive app for new customers, although you and other early adopters will always benefit from your support.

For Table Tennis Edge app users, there is an update available on both IOS and Android. We've add a Reverse Pendulum serve module and some other improvements. If you've had problems with the app crashing on IOS, that issue is resolved.

Guys, here's how the latest version of the app looks. For existing users, it's important to keep looking out for updates.

Brett: I shall show this app to people in my club from Monday onwards.

You have a few days left to raise the app prices! :)

BTW: did not realize that my TTedge membership expired a month ago. I shall update again.

A few things:

I wonder if there might be value in making a long / short serve module (there might be even if this app is naturally in 2D). If so, you can eventually combine it into a full-scale simulator. For example, we assume that for touch purposes, the screen is divided into 4 quadrants. Player can serve long or short underspin or topspin versions of these serves. If I touch:
  • top-left: if I think serve is short underspin
  • top-right: if I think serve is short topspin
  • bottom-left: if I think serve is long underspin
  • bottom-right: if I think serve is long topspin
So, you can have the above in each module (for example, in the Reverse Pendulum module).

You can also have a module (take more money from us for this!) in which you mix all types of serves (punch, pendulum, etc). Of course, you'll have to have one player do all serves (rather than several as it exists now).

You can also up the stakes: so, if I touch the screen after optimal time to respond (based on real life serve receive situation), I get a FAIL even if I gauge the serve right. This time to respond obviously would depend on the serve type (one might assume that topspin serves should be taken at top of bounce, etc).

Lastly, there is no reason why you would only have 1 reverse pendulum server: I find your reverse serve technique to be quite different from the guy you chose for the app.

BTW: your punch serve is very deceptive. AngryAngryAngry

Brett: you're from a country where the kids, to a large extent, are still unpolluted by all the brain frying game playing on smart phones. Out here in the US, when I see cadet or junior level players practicing (even the national team members), I see them playing games on their phone (like Clash of Clans) during their downtime (and there is a lot of downtime in clubs, especially during league nights). Hopefully, we get to a time when the coaches tell them to get on your app while they are waiting for their turn at the table.

Thanks slevin

The possibilities are endless. You'll should see this app evolve into very interesting.

It's not even close to finished. You'll have a variety of players serving different serves at you. My Pendulum is next. Once I have all my serves in the app (for example) I'll mixed them up etc. Updates will be fairly constant.

I read all your other suggestions too, so thanks for taking the time.

+1 on serve depth option

Could be as simple as picking short or long when facing various serve types.
Jim Butler might be the most deceptive for this.

Brett,

Great job so far on the app.

Here's a few suggestions:

A non competitive app mode to study contact points. For example, a way to watch serve contact in slow motion and option to zoom in closer to see the contact. Use of a ball with stripes and being able to toggle from stripped to not striped.

A hidden serve mode where the player must guess the spin without seeing contact. You may have to zoom out a little bit to get a good view of this. For example, I intentionally don't look at the contact point and try to guess the serve sometimes. Seeing the second bounce would be good for this.

Keep up the great work.

Slow mo is a complicated on serves as you need a lot of frames. Hidden contact idea is interesting.

Thanks NextLevel, I think the app still has a way to go before being ridiculously good, though it's a big improvement from where it was.

We are going to introduce a passive watching module where you just view the serves at reduced speed to help with learning. The type of spin will be printed on the screen. This module should be available in a week's time. William Henzell's backspin and nospin serve will be in the next update too. Although Henzell served mostly tomahawk, he had a very deceptive backspin/nospin variation.

Brett,

Great job on the latest update.

Here's a few suggestions:

Add a tracer line to serves and display multiple serves simultaneously. This will show the speed/trajectory difference between different types of serves.

On your youtube video for the snake serve, you do a side by side comparison between the snake and non snake serve. A mode to do this for serves in the app would be nice.

Another option for comparison would be to superimpose images.

For example, for multiball down the line versus cross court, superimpose both shots on top of each other so body positioning can be compared.

You will need to do some video filtering and sync work, but the output could also be used on your youtube channel, so the work can be multipurpose, spreading out your cost across platforms.

I like the side-by-side and superimpose ideas. This sort of thing requires a lot of time, but I've recorded it for consideration.

The non competitive mode is implement, as you suggested. I'm considering taking everything out but the ball and seeing if people can read the spin by the reaction. This would just be an option, of course.

Here is an overview of where the app is at.

Nice job on the update.

What is your general thought about the importance of the sound of contact?

Do you teach people to listen to the sound to determine if the serve is no spin versus topspin/backspin?

As far as I can tell, in the serve game mode, the backspin/no spin has the same sound. Are you using the same sound for all contact? (I have been practicing lately with a chopper who is pretty good at mixing in a no spin chop occasionally. I have been trying to listen to the contact, so I have also been trying to apply this to serve receive.)

BTW, I really like the receiver's edge video with the side by side and overlay. It would be interesting to see if I can hear the difference in a no spin versus spin serve.

Posted By: Brett Clarke
Date Posted: 05/23/2016 at 7:57pm
The topic of sound is interesting. I feel that sound is a cue however it's often not there when you need it. You may be playing in a noisy hall or the opponent may be stamping their foot. Most of the time in competition, the sound won't be there for you.

You are right, we used generic sound in the app. I might consider changing that one day. There were technical reasons for this decision.

In relation to the Receiver's Edge series, Part 2 is available and it's about backspin and nospin. The original sound is included. The video is an exclusive for ttEDGE members and it's unlikely to ever appear on YouTube.

Thanks Brett. This app is really getting better and better. Really looking forward to future updates.

I'm wondering, do you have any plans at the moment to do a major overhaul of the UI? While what you have at the moment works, I'm hoping it'll be given a more modern style design sometime in the future :) I also think this will help attract a lot more people.

Posted By: Brett Clarke
Date Posted: 05/28/2016 at 9:59am
Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean by "modern style" and "overhaul of the UI". You are obviously comparing it to other apps, so I'm hoping you can be specific about what you want. Maybe you can point us towards some apps you consider modern and we can take a look.

I really appreciate your input however the advice is too general. I feel like you've said "improve the app" and left it at that. We generally try to implement what users want as long as it is something tangible.

Tried the new update on 2 phones.

In multiball, the speed bonus is now always 0 after each game. BH/FH/block, same thing, always 0. I usually saw a speed bonus of 900-1000 before the update.

Speed bonus on serves is ok.

The speed bonuses and smileys have been tightened up significantly. Let me know if you like it or hate it.

I know. I find Trevor's backhand and forehand really hard to read and my usual early anticipation isn't going that well. I can get 2 smileys pretty often, though I'm making a bunch of mistakes and I'm surprised every single time. It's good training though.

I have mostly ignored the speed bonus because the number pre update was always about the same so therefore not interesting.

It would be interesting to see a graph of actual reaction times for a session and maybe a way to compare sessions over time.

Thanks qpskfec, the graph stuff obviously needs to be in the app eventually. We actually have bigger plans than just a graph. At the moment we are focused on filling the app with more shots which is a surprisingly big job. Once that's done, we can work on other things.

Great update. I'm sure you guys have heaps planned for the future already, but one thing I would like to see is the ability to have shots played continuously.

What I mean by that is if you get it right (or even if you get it wrong, depending on preference), the screen doesn't pause for a short period before the next ball. This way it should mimic a real rally a lot better. Ideally, the ball would be returned at a speed similar to a real rally.

Keep up the great work.

I get problems in the 'games' section on my Android device.

I choose 'tap' instead of 'swipe'. However, many taps do not register.

This does not happen in other parts of the app.

BTW: could you add a pause button during the slow-mo replay section of the serves module?

Great work!

Nice update.

+1 on slevin's comments

I have tried the game mode on 2 phones. I have no idea if my tap isn't registering or I am too slow. Maybe there should be "easy, med, hard" modes so players can actually tell what is happening.

To be more useful, I would like to see an option for feedback on reaction time. Maybe a bar with a tick marks for my reaction time versus what is needed to win the point.

Another option to have voice recognition. For example you could say "right/left/topspin/backspin" etc. instead of tapping/swiping. It would be interesting to see the difference between voice and physical contact. I expect using voice will be a bit faster.

You need to be quick to stay in the rally. If the ball passes the end line, William takes the point. The multiball section is designed differently and allows for users to be much slower.

Next week there will be different levels - beginner, intermediate, advanced and pro. There will also be a match against Trevor. The existing game against William is intermediate level, so train hard!
