I've been taking lessons on and off for a couple years. I've had three different coaches (two in Florida and one in Vietnam). I've discussed intricate parts of the strokes and mechanics, but I've never had a coach mention breathing to me. I've probably taken 80 or 100 lessons over the last 2 or 3 years, maybe more. I'm currently working with a coach 3 times a week in Saigon. No USATT Tournaments here, but I would imagine that I'm playing around the 2000 mark now.

No TT coaches have ever discussed breathing with me. I guess there are too many technical flaws that are far more important than breathing.

But in tennis they stress to exhale on the stroke - so your idea about inhaling during back swing and then exhale on forward swing would be ideal. I notice many players during out league matches (If I'm coaching them) actually don't breathe during points. I have remind them to breathe, relax ...it's obvious but players don't do it.
