OK looking for a blade that fits the following requirements:
Slow -- Def or ALL speed Some flex -- should still be able to hit a good loop Straight handle available Good balance and feel, lots of control Please suggest! Here are some I'm considering: Donic Defplay Senso -- heard it has a lot of vibration and is a bit head-heavy. If I could get it without the "Senso" hollow handle, it may be perfect. Good blend of def speed and flex. Yasaka Extra -- this may be my best option, but not too sure how popular it is among defenders? Gambler Aralyte Carbon -- unfortunately, the regular sized blade is no longer available with straight handle and I'm not sure I want to go to the huge oversized style. I don't want anything to impede my quickness when switching from BH to FH. I don't mind slightly oversized blades, but the pure defense blades look a little too big/awkward for my game. Maybe I should just stick with my Daweii -- I really don't have any complaints about it, I just can't help but think I am missing something by playing with a $12 blade.

right now I'm testing a defplay senso (non-classic version) with straight handle. atm it has tg3neo and 563 medium pips 1.8 sponge on it. balance is fine with this setup; head-heavy but not drastic. i also tried replacing the 563 with HRT Wujilong. Total weight 189, and indeed, head heavy. but, tg3neo and hrt wujilong are both fairly heavy rubbers. swap one of those out with donic vario and it would be a totally different story. This blade is fantastic. looping underspin with tg3neo against my robot, i've never heard the topspin burn up the catch net like this before. a friend called it a can't miss looping blade, i agree yasaka extra... strikes me as a weird choice; but i don't have much input there Gambler AC may only be made in straight now, but if you posted a LF thread, you could probably get one in flared funny that you're using the DW2, i was just thinking a couple days ago how that would make a good modern defender's blade. it's a very good blade at 12 dollars. i think the defplay senso would blow your socks off though. my 2 cents

btw the defplay senso is less than $35 here:
http://www.tabletennis11.com/other_eng/tt-blade-donic-defplay-senso
if your order is over 50 euros, it's free shipping, and 5% off the blade.... larger orders will discount the blade even more and as others have done, you can add a weight in the bottom of the handle for balance (that's a nice feature of it; having the openings)

regarding the head heaviness of defplay senso, you can make the headsize smaller with no detremental effect to the blades performance,i reduced mine to samsonov alpha dimensions to combat tennis elbow and that payed off . with a tenergy 05 fx 1.9 and 388d 0.5 the total weight is 140g,this is the spinniest blade i have used on both chop and loop strokes, however the straight handle was too thin for me so i sanded down a flared handle to make it straight and that is perfect
if you like a banana flightpath on your loops this blade does it like no other i`ve seen Edited by firetack - 07/23/2012 at 2:18pm |

The alligator combi looks interesting, but it is described as light and stiff. I would prefer heavy (90 - 100 gr) and some flex.

Dang you guys are selling me on the Defplay Senso -- I may have to go with that and add some weight to the handle.

DHS Dragonow 2.0mm (red) and Dawei Saviga V ox. I also sanded off the flare handle's back edges a bit, so it's much easier to twiddle now... |

Hunter Hawk...3ply control monster that can chop, block, loop, and smash and the ST and FL handles are very comfortable. Makes a great hardbat or great with thinner sponges.

that's an intriguing blade for sure, but its track record seems to be that it's fragile

A friend of mine recently bought Xiom Aigis from tabletennis11 and didn't change the blade since then (about 2 weeks). I see it as a sign that it's a very good blade because he's normally changing two blades per week :-)
Here's an example of how he plays (he is the defender there, of course)

How about donic persson powerallround?
I have one. Medium speed, medium soft and good feeling. Slightly head hevy due to the hollow handle, but that problem can be solvet. I know Fabian Åkerstöm (Lp blocker) uses it. \Robin

I can chop as well as hit with my Yasaka Extra, but it doesn't chop as well as my Butterfly Defence II. I would say it hits harder, though.

It is a thin blade and some here have had a problem but I have had zero issues with mine. I have edge tape so that may help protect some.

I would recommend the BTY Andrzej Grubba. It has great control (5 ply), and hits loops like a beauty. Comes in a straight handled version, it can also pull off a very Waldner-esque drop shot.
