what long pips rubber gives you the most spin reversal when chopping (preferably away from the table)? Do you use the pips with or without a sponge? If you do use a sponge, what thickness should it be? Thanks for the help!

I've tried many of the long pips . . . mostly the Chinese ones . . . and I like the Friendship 755. I've used it OX and with 1.0mm sponge. More FX with OX. More hitting power with sponge. The 837 is easier to use, but not as deceptive.

Reversal is not equal to control, and I'm sure that you'll want to land your chops in. Plus I think that you also don't want to only chop with your backhand, maybe pick hit a few too? In that case grippy long pips with soft sponge is your best bet.

To answer the original question, the treated pips (drN/hallmark) give the most reversal whether at the table, away from the table, or standing in the next room.  However, you'll feel less of a difference chopping and backed away from the table than you will if you're blocking at the table.

Oh, and yes, no sponge (ox) makes for the most reversal.

Well "Spin reversal" is best from hard, treated (frictionless) Long Pips like DrN Super Block or the legendary Palio BE on Blades with hard outer plies. (the harder the pips and the harder the outer ply - the shorter the dwell time and the less spin you loose - watch DrNeubauer Video to see what i mean!)

One problem with frictionless pips is, that it is frictionless Wacko - so you can't give any spin by yourself. If your opponent plays with less spin - you return will also don't have much!!!

For the most "backspin" away from the table you have to use a sponge (best between 0,5 and 1,2mm) and grippy Long Pips.
Pips ox are better and more deceptive near to the table, but you need to pay more attention to your blade - some blades don't like some Pips Tongue!

For fara away from the table defense you should try P1R, FL3 or (if you like chinese rubbers) Meteor 8512.

PS: I played the 837 ox on a 5ply Hinoki blade (BTY Pohoralek - slower than Jonyer) and it's a dream! Very deceptive if you "cut" (abstechen in german - don't know a better english word - you have to make a short, fast move downwards with the wrist) near to the table or from half distance - my opponent couldn't play another topspin after that!!! I really don't understand, why so many players say 837 would be not deceptive... Cry
