What is a good sponge thickness for learning RPB? My forehand sponge is 2.0mm, which works fine for me.
And do you recommend any particular lightweight Chinese rubbers? I'm trying to keep both the weight and the cost down.
Thanks!

A good and inexpensive rubber for RPB would be IQUL, say 40, at 2.0 or 2.2mm.
Check it out at colestt.com.
It is good for FH too.

Unless your rpb is miles ahead of your forehand, I would keep it at the same thickness as your forehand...maybe less. I'm using Gambler Outlaw 2.0, and I'm liking it a lot more than IQUL (didn't have very good experience there, maybe it didn't work with my blade/technique at the time).
Other good ones are 729 Higher series, Palio CJ8000, LKT Rapid Sound/Soft. Everything mentioned is 14 USD. |

Thanks very much. Do you recommend softer, med, or firmer sponge?

I tried a lot of rubbers for RPB including tenergy05 FX, but the best one suited for me is roundell soft (the new green one) in 2.1.

Medium soft to medium. Stay away from hard, in my personal experience.

Medium to Medium-Soft Japenese or Euro type rubbers would work best in what ever size you can handle.

In order to loop effectively, maybe I would need at least 1.8mm? How much tackiness should the rubber have? Thanks. |

You could loop with 1.5 if you wanted. I think you'd want at least 2.0
to get that zip for your (aggressive?) penhold style.
Tackiness...it's a lot harder to play tacky on the backhand for me, due to the short, compact swing, as opposed to the longer swing of the forehand. Most people just go with a non-tacky, grippy Euro type rubber on the backhand. |
