This sucks.. I bought my first custom setup over a month ago:  Yasaka Sweden Extra cpen with 2.0 Mark V on both sides.  I play 90% rpb when using cpen backhand.  This weekend, I decided that I'd like to switch to shakehand.  I won't go into details why, but this is a done decision.  I'm definitely still in the beginner realm, so switching is no problem.  And some basement hitting this weekend with shakehand showed me that it's actually decently natural.

My problem right now is my setup.  I could continue to use the Sweden Extra with 2.0 Mark Vs, as that's a very good beginning setup, but I'm hesitant to do so as the penhold handle isn't the greatest fit, and my hands at minimum are average to above - average sized.

Budget isn't a huge concern, but would you just recommend using my cpen setup till I graduate into 1200+?

I've done some research, and I'm leaning towards getting a Nittaku Latika with Yasaka Rising Dragon 2.0 on FH and Yasaka Rakza 7 2.0 on BH.  That'd cost ~$120.  Would that be a decent setup to start things off on?  I'm also getting an itch to burn $$ on equipment, with me looking at blades such as the Violin, Acoustic, and even Acoustic Carbon Inner and Latika Carbon.  There are contradictory opinions are "learning" on carbon, but the consensus seems to be against it.

I would probably get another Sweden Extra in SH and transfer the rubbers (it looks like money is not an issue, though :) )

About that itch to burn $$ though... It's your money and your fun, but - you don't need expensive equipment to get better and cross 1200 threshold and go further. Just need to stick with one for at least a few months.  Most would advise against carbon (or too fast setups), unless you are getting plenty of coaching. If you just want to try it out, may be ask your friends in the club to have a hit with their paddles.

P.S. Interesting how you somehow ended up with only Nittaku blade choices.

I completely agree with pgpg, stick with Sweden Extra and Mark V´s.
I learned to play exactly with Mark V 2.0mm and a 5-ply blade. At 1200 this is the best combo to learn with.

When I started .....best setup for me was Mark V 2.0 both sides on a Yasaka Extra........Yinhe W6 almost same and I had one of those as well because the handle was bigger.

T11 has a Yasaka Extra 3D which is very good too...only $31

can't you just add some kind of knob to extend the handle a bit and grip tape to modify the fit if necessary and wait a while then get the blade you really want (such as acoustic) when you are ready.

this is a great idea. Got any links to some customizations like this?

I'm a Cpen player as well but I prefer longer handles since I can put hose clamps at the ends to move the balance of the blade closer to the end. Really difficult to pull of rpb flicks with a head heavy blade.

Sorry, I haven't looked into this modification since I am haven't play penholder for ages.  Will ask around though and update with any info.

I was gonna recommend Yinhe T4 with Bomb Mopha Pro both sides but your suggestion is equally good for a beginner

I don't know about this particular blade, but the head shape usually changes from pen to FL, even within a given model.
