Rutis is the updated version of Nittaku CP548, used by the former world champion Guo Yuehua, the first world cup winner. The old CP548 is 3-ply and all made of Walnut. Rutis added 2 layers of G-Carbon in addition to the 3 plies of Walnut. However people speculate the core is actually Kiri.

Thanks so much GenomicsKnight. Any idea how walnut plays compared to say hinoki? Feel - soft/hard? Bounce?

Walnut is harder and very spinny. My friend's racket is old and heavy.

By the way CP stands for Chinese Penhold and 548 phonetically sounds like Guo Yuehua in Japanese.
Here is a side shoot of Rutis. Here is the link to the article on World Table Tennis that talks about Rutis. http://www.world-tt.com/cgi-bin/maker/maker.cgi?&ID=67&DATE=all&LOGO=all&CATEGORY=all |

Rutis has a unique feel: u need strength to use the power of this blade.
eg. slow short swings and passive blocks without using strength gives weak speed. fast huge swings and active blocks is powerful. Conclusion: The bounce is not linear. So you may need sometime to adjust your stroke. BTW did Guo Yuehua use Nittaku 548? I may be selling my custom ordered Rutis J... anyone interested? |

I don't think he ever used CP548 in any international competition. He used an old DHS blade like others in his time, named PF4. The rubber he used is also called PF4. CP548 came out after he retired. The old PF4-032 and 016 blades were 5-ply and 08 is 7-ply, I think. Edited. |
